The most performance: Change power setting to Maximum Performance (High Performance in Vista).

The most battery life: Change power setting to Maximum Battery (Power Saver in Vista).

For laptops, it's generally not about pure performance, because that usually means more heat and more noise. I usually run my laptop in Power Saver mode unless I'm hooked to my docking station. That keeps it cool, quiet, and the battery lasts a lot longer.

I'm not sure about GMA950, but for most integrated graphics, just go into BIOS and set VRAM to the maximum value.

I would have to disagree here. The only thing Maximum Performance does is disable SpeedStep/PowerNow, causing the cpu to run at full throttle. This is kind of unneccessary, as you can achieve the same result in Balanced when the cpu comes under a heavy enough load. At least this way the cpu is not radiating intense heat 100% of the time (only when called for).
