Received the DV7-2170US I bought from B & H Photo and so far very happy with it!! Have already applied for the free Windows 7 upgrade and will probably dual boot it with Vista. Runs very cool and super quiet altho not being a hard core gamer I'm sure I could make it heat up a bit if I did! So far so good, but with all the horror stories I read here sure hope I don't have too many problems with it and have to contact HP for service! Have applied for the 1 year warranty and all set there too.
Can't find a better price for this anywhere that B & H, they are close to $200 cheaper than any other place I checked and yes this is new and NOT a refurb!!

^ congrats on your new machine! I agree with you though - I think that the complaints are better remembered than praises... I guess it's human nature. For all the people with bad systems or with systems that overheat, there are tons and tons of other people with absolutely no issues whatsoever!
I have the 2nd most powerful core2duo processor in my unit and it runs extremely cool. I game for about 30-45 minutes at a time and the highest temps I have seen were in the lower 70C range ... definitely nothing to have a heart attack over...
anyway, enjoy your machine! -
Thanks and I am enjoying, sending this post from my laptop as we speak!!

Is the DV7-2270US similar? It's one up, maybe?
I was wondering what you think of the overall quality. Would you buy it again?
What is the battery life?
Thanks in advance for any answers. -

i duno about battery life since my machine is almost 100% on my desk, plugged into the docking station/port replicator. i have not had the battery in my unit since august 08 and dont really care about it. l0l
as for quality, i love this thing. i use it for at least 5-6 hours per day, everyday, and have had no problems in the last 15 months of ownership.
i would definitely buy again, especially now since prices are cheaper than when i bought my unit
i have used this machine to game, general surfing, writing tons of papers, doing tons of research, burning dvds, making backups, etc. this machine is also my main media center. i watch hulu/dvds/avi/mpeg movies on here and output it to either my 42" plasma tv in my bedroom or my 50" plasma tv in my living room. never had any issues whatsoever. i know i have not even come close to using the machine for what it's capable of but that's fine for me. i never went 'all out' on a machine before, and suffered greatly as a result (buying $300 desktops and using them until they died) so with this unit, i wanted the best of the best and my expectations were fully met.
if battery life is a concern, stick with a lower voltage cpu. if battery life is not a concern, get the fastest proc you can afford. my machine has not lagged once in the past year. when i had it build, the t9600 processor was a $600 option
im gonna step off my soap box now. i definitely recommend this unit as do tons of other people. -
puter1,
Overall love my 2170 so far. Quality seems very good and looks are sweet. Main difference I can see between the 2170 and 2270 is the CPU. Mine has the P7550 dual core and yours would have the Q9000 quad. Also yours would have the 500 GB hard drive but 7200 rpm. Think except for those it's pretty much the same. Oh and yours has Wondows 7 installed, I just ordered the upgrade. If the price is right I would recommend without a doubt!! -
DDR3 RAM as well, so different board. I have a dv6-1253cl which is almost identical to the dv7-2170US. Awsome notebook. Sorta wish I had sprung for the 17" but you know. I find that the ATI GPU they used performs great and runs really cool too. I dunno how the new Nvidia GPUs are running but I have never seen my GPU get hotter than 75*C which is at least 10*C cooler than the high end Nvidia GPUs I have seen. Glad your so pleased with your HP. We hear on here a lot how bad they are and how HP sucks as a company but its good to know that they get things right every once in a while. Great job HP, or should I say Quanta?

Where can I download the temp monitor you guys talk about to check CPU and others??
-

http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
links for downloads (32 and 64 bit) are on the upper left hand of the webpage. it's a free app and tells u temps of all ur components that have temp sensons on them - hard drives, cpu, motherboard, gpu, etc. -
I have another question. I checked out a local Staples and checked out a HP DV6 and DV7.
I wasn't sure what to make of the DVD burner drive being so close to a 'corner' of the laptop. The tray isn't rectangular and has a wavy 'corner' when the tray opens. I'd be worried about the alignment of that down the line if you know what I mean.
What do you HP owners think of that? Do you care? ;-) I know that might sound like a strange critique but like I said, I don't know what to make of it. I am used to a more rectangular burner drive that opens/closes and is closer to the middle of the laptop. In other words, a more traditional design.
Comments?
Oh yeah, anyone who has owned or tried another brand such as Dell or Asus, how would you compare?
Thanks for answering my questions! The DV7 is still in contention but I was a bit more doubtful after the 'in person' inspection. ;-) -

^ it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever on the performance or the durability of the drive. personally, i think the only critique could be an asthetic one but that's a personal choice. if you think it's ugly, don't get it. but i dont think it effects the burner a single bit.
i've had my dv7 now for about 15-16 months and i've had no issues with the funny looking DVD drivei've watched many dvds, burned many cd's and dvds all without issue.

Obviously haven't had mine as long as timesqauare, but don't think the curve affects anything but maybe your tastes. Performance wise it shouldn't be a showstopper of course unless you just can't stand to look at it!!
Got my DV7-2170US!!
