mods, could you please sticky this thread ?

the purpose of this thread is to give an opportunity for those that have bought a new HP laptop and experienced defects/problems out of the box to post their details. eventually, this thread can be used as a reference to HP, consumer advocate sites and retailers of these products to inform and get corrective action.

i will post my issues first:

    Envy 17-1010NR unit 1 (new):

bad optical drive, dead pixels (2)

    Envy 17-1010NR unit 2 (new):

circuit/main board noise, left side i/o panel misaligned with body. sent in for service once, noise issue not resolved and laptop damage due to service. sent in a second time and waiting.

    Envy 17-1011NR unit 1 (new):

circuit/main board noise, left side i/o panel misaligned with body

I could say quality issues on three Envy 14s but unfortunately this thread, along with many others before and after, will be thrown into a giant pile of noise thread. Nobody will read through hundreds or even thousands of posts looking for something. Forget about anyone using search.

It would actually be better to have a bunch of smaller post count threads than to have massive threads where things get lost. Maybe that's their motive? Advertisers hoping to hide the loud mouths? They do it at places like AVS etc.

All three were brand new 17s.

First Envy directly from HP (1000CTO):

Wobble (although the heat warped the frame in a matter of one week so that it no longer wobbled)
Extreme heat (tech support told me laptops get hot....)
High pitched whine somewhat related to the power source (it would come and go, tech supports says they couldn't hear a whine in their test model...)
Power button sometimes took two or three tries to turn on the machine (you can send it in, but there is no guarantee we can fix it)
Left hinge was not attached correctly so the monitor wasn't stable

    Second Envy from Amazon (1011nr):

Two high pitched whines, one related to the power source and the other I have yet to figure out
Computer crashes and gives me a Black, white and grey checkered screen

    Third Envy from Amazon (1011nr):

I opened the box and the computer had marks and scratches on the bottom of the body.
    Wobble.

Maybe the fourth time is a charm? Or in metril's case it was the fifth...
