For Video driver 195.81 and recent drivers, the registry tells the driver to save power under the battery using their power saving technology called PowerMizer.

After installing the latest driver, You can adjust this by letting the driver use adaptive policy, here is how (Credit to kenside34 from this post but use the following settings):
    1. Press windows+R
    2. Type regedit
    3. Press enter
    4. Select
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{**a series of numbers that are different**}\0000\PerfLevelSrc
    5. Adjust the following keys
PowerMizerDefault 1 (Allow power performance on battery)
PerfLevelSrc to 3333 means (use adaptive policy under AC and Battery)
    6. Restart
The result is the clock will be adjusted according to the program request, it will underclock itself for light use.

The stock driver from HP, doesn't support OpenGL and doesn't use PowerMizer so the clock stays at the default for all uses.

    Optional (overclock for 3D programs):
    A. Setup Riva Tuner to recognize the GPU
    1. Download and install RivaTuner from here
    2. go to c:\Program Files(x86)\RivaTuner\
    3. You will find two files called RivaTuner. Select the one that does not have an icon and has the CFG type, right click on it and click delete.
    4. Extract the attached file into the folder instead of the deleted one

    B. Adjust the 3D clocks
    1. Click on customize->system settings as shown in the picture
    [IMG]
    2. Enable driver-level hardware overclocking and select performance 3D
    [IMG]
    3. choose a maximum of 700/1540/1066
    4. click Apply

Stress test the system and Enjoy an overclcocking performance on demand.

    Enjoy!

Well it has been around for quite a while and i think it's set to 3333 by default, at least it was in all drivers i've had installed on my machine. Actually i needed to turn off the PowerMizer, as it was making my sound, well, mizer. Clicks, pops and stutters all over the place, every few seconds.

This doesn't happen on every video chip though, on an Acer with GT130M the issue was non-existent, but you should know it just in case you encounter it.

PerfLevelSrc is set by default to 3333 which means use a balanced policy while on AC or Battery, but the default for PowerMizerDefault is 3 not 1 which means prefer battery over performance on battery. This lets the GPU downclock to the least values while on battery and will not rebound back until it is plugged into AC again. If you have performance issues while on battery, this maybe the problem.

So using recent drivers and while using the battery, you are stuck with 135/197/275 for the clocks unless you set the PowerMizerDefault to 3.

It works fine on the GT230 for the new quad Dv6t,Dv7t,Dv8t. The stock driver does not support PowerMizer and uses a clock of 500/800/1100 all the time.

In Addition, RivaTuner needs configuration adjustment in order for it to recognize the GPU, not everyone is familiar with how to configure it.

I have tried this method but for some reason, it is not possible to change the profiles under battery for GT230 even though it works great on AC. It says the profile is loaded but when i monitor the clocks, they stayed at minimum.

There are certain bugs in the Performance utility. If you decrease the clocks past a certain value they will get stuck at that value or lower. In my case it results in a "The changes made were invalid and will not be applied" message.

I have been unable to get RivaTuner to work with my DV8 (GT230m). If I start it up with the stock rivatuner.cfg, it doesn't see my display adapter. If I use the zipped .cfg from the link in this thread above, Rivatuner crashes (stops working) within a few seconds of being started, but in the few seconds before it crashed, I could see that it was seeing the display adapter as being the G105 which is not correct.

I would be most grateful if anyone could offer some help that enable me to get Rivatuner working correctly with my DV8 and the G230m.

Edit: Many thanks for your help khaledseif via PMs. Everything appears to be working properly now with the 197.16 LVTG driver/inf and RivaTuner is no longer crashing.

use lower values to make it stable.
