Hello All,
I own a dv6t - 1300 with windows 7 home premium. Just finished a clean format, then followed the guide by Les (flamenko) & blackviper (external site) and now have a few concerns.
1) In regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ SYSTEM/ CurrentControlSet/ Control
I reduced the kill time to 5000. Can i go low further as i don't see much improvement in the shutdown time or is it unsafe?
2) I partitioned the HD to 50Gb (C: ), 150GB (D: ) & 100GB (E: )
I was suppose to install windows on E: but mistakenly (& foolishly) proceeded to install on C. After installing a few applications (MS Office & Adobe still left) i see I have 26 GB free.
i) What is the minimum space i need on the drive for the system to function smoothly?
ii) Can i add more space to it without reformatting?
thank u folks.

Reducing the kill time may improve the shutdown time but will result in data loss if a program is running at the time of shutdown process.
Remember kill time is the maximum allowed time for a process to quit properly.
i)As per Windows spec the minimum space required is 16GB for 32bit and 20GB for 64bit. there is no any upper limit. the space needed entirely depends on the softwares you install.
I personally use two partitions, one for windows OS alone and another for the softwares I install. To save disk space I usually compress the disk's file table.
ii) yes, you can do but you should have free space or a free partition available to the right side of the current partition which you want to expand. -
thanks for your reply.
i have 150GB & 100GB on two other drives. I want to transfer the 25 Gb from D: to C: . How do i do it without formatting?
thanks -
I really cannot understand your question.. -
apologies, i noticed i used the word drives instead of partition in my second post.
I partitioned the HD to 50Gb (C: ), 150GB (D: ) & 100GB (E: )
I have the windows OS on C: How do i increase the space on C: without reformatting? -
here is the steps you need to follow..
1)select controlpanel -> system and security -> Administrative tools -> computer management
2)in 'computer Management' window click 'Disk Management' which is in left side bar.
3) it will show the drives and the partitions in it, find the partition 'C' on which you have installed windows then note down the partition which is next to 'C' probably it may be 'D' or 'E'. make sure the partition is primary partition, if it is extended partition (logical drive) please halt the procedure and inform me
4)backup the date of the partition which is next to 'C'. you can copy the data to another partition or to another HDD or drive.
5 )make sure you have taken a copy of the data and the partition next to 'C' is primary partition. now right click the partition and click 'Delete Volume'. now you can see some free space (black color) next to 'C'.
6)now right click 'C' and select 'extend volume'. enter only the amount you want to extend ( you may not need the whole free space to be used for windows alone),follow the instructions displayed in the window, I think there is no need to explain those too..
7)once done I am assuming you may not have fully utilized the free space which is 100GB/150GB depending on the partition next to 'C'. there still may be some free space (black color). now right click the free space and click 'new simple volume' and follow on window instruction.. -
thanks a ton. worked like a charm
i added space to C: as needed. The only difference here is the D: now reflects as a logical drive and not primary. this isn't going to hamper drive speed or affect any other usage will it? -
there will be no problem with performance..
could you attach a screenshot of your diskmanagement window? I want to know the exact partitions... -
it says "this is not a valid image file" ???
to me it seems like a regular image. jpeg - 100KB fits the requirements. tried to attach it. not sure why it wont allow. -
Guides Followed - Format Done - Need Further Help!
