I just got my new DV5t laptop and I want to be really safe in regards to Spyware, Adware and Viruses. I have 64 bit windows Vista. What programs are pre-installed to combat any malware from intruding on my new machine? I also want to know if what comes pre-installed is enough or do I need more protection? Feel free to post your security settings too.

A good antivirus software along with Windows Defender and Windows Firewall should cover you. :) I believe the DV5 comes with Norton preinstalled. It is OK these days (it used to be an absolute resource hog), but you'd be better off investing in something like NOD32 IMO.

The other thing you should do is keep an eye on what you have enabled under Network and Sharing Center down the bottom. Only enable things that are actually nessesary for your network.

One quick unrelated question for you if you don't mind, since you're running x64 Vista on a DV5T. When you use the touch buttons do you get an on screen feedback or even some sound?

If you're looking for a good anti-spyware program, I recommend Malwarebytes. It pretty much smokes every other alternative in terms of detection.

Well here is my current set-up:

    Avast Anti-Virus Free(All scanners on)

    SuperAntiSpyware

    CCleaner(Use every few days)

Revo Unistaller(Use to uninstall anysoftware or old updates)

    and
    Windows Defender(On by default)

    Windows Firewall by default.

The big question I have is the Windows Firewall. I have read hundreds of posts and still cant figure out if it is adequate enough or not. I was maybe looking at Online Armor Firewall. Does any one have any suggestions on my Firewall or anything else? Please Post!

Does anybody think I need more protection or am I pretty safe?
