Hello everyone i have a hp dv5000 series laptop (dv9596xx to be exact) and it has a HD DVD drive installed in it. However I recently bought the 300 HD DVD and I am unable to play the movie, quick play responds with the error message "unable to play this file"
I have identified that I have the TS-L802A drive in my laptop and I have updated the firmware from the Hp support website, along with the quickplay update and still i get the same error message.
By the way I am running nvidia beta 163.44 drivers along with windows vista ultimate 64-bit OS. Also I have only tried the 300 HD DVD so I cant determine if it is the actual DVD that is the problem
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

A dv5000 series but you have a dv9596xx or 5996xx? Must be the dv9000 series. Did you try to play it using Media Center or maybe it needs a special player.

tzastrow, you updated the firmware of the TS-L802A? what is the firmware now? and could you gimme the link to the upgrade?
perhaps you should run the official HP drivers for the gfx card, i have a similar issue with mine which is the same model drive. sometimes it plays fine but most of the time the video skips or doesnt play at all -
Sorry kanehi i wrote that wrong i do actually have a dv900 series laptop but i did correctly write the model number, dv9596xx
SideSwipe I updated the firmware to the HP-21 frimware update on HP's update and it can be found here

I have tried Media Center but according to HP's website quickplay is the only software included that is able to play HD DVD's. Also i am going to roll back my drivers to HP's official driver to see if that makes a difference but if anyone has any more suggestions please let me know -
I would try and get a copy of Power DVD that has HD DVD support to test. It could be HP's software and not the drive.

ok so interesting development, I rolled back the drivers to the original ones from hp and I got the HD DVD drive to stat playing the movie. However after 7 minutes the movies freezes and quickplay needs to be restarted. By this I mean regardless of what point of the movie is playing after seven minutes of the hd dvd spinning the movie freeze.
This is ridiculous and I am pretty much out of ideas, it might be time to deal with hp tech support -
There is a live on-line tech support chat. Could try that.

Hi!!!
I have a very good news for you!
I was up all night and I down loaded quickplay four times. I was really tired, after nothing happened, but after all those times spending with, something has changed.
The face of Quickplay has changed and I found a HD dvd logo on the right bottom of my sreen.
I was so happy to see that, but soon I had to realize that, I'm still not able to watch the HD movie on my laptop. After that I was reinstalling the program(quickplay)wich has allready existed in my computer, and so and so....!
After the third reinstalliation, QUICKPLAY has asked me if I wnt to check for update. The first time nothing happened, but I had the feeling, I was doing something, so I kept installing again. After another twoo instalation the upgrade has started, finaly. After that Quickplay has disapered from my desktop. I was waithing after the installation, but nothing happened. I started to look for in my programs, and I was surprised, because it was there. I clicked on the Quickplay tab and I have get a brand new Quickplay.
It was black and white before and it is colored now.It just works fine with all of my HD dvds. I updated the driver couple of times during the whole process from HP webside. I was talking to six HP technicians in 48 hours and the last one could hel, becaus she sent me the previous version of quckplay and I was able to take the last stepp fromthere to update to the latest wersion of Quickplay.I hope that I could help.
Sorry for my English, I'm still working on it!
