Hi all this is my first post here but I thought I would see if anybody had also had these problems with HD DVD. Sorry its a but long I just had to vent my frustrations about HD DVD and HDMI on a laptop.

So I bought my dv9260nr about 3 months ago, I wanted a laptop with a HDDVD so that I could plug it into my plasma and watch them at high def. So this laptop seemed ideal with its HD DVD and HDMI connection.

When I first got the laptop I tested the HD DVD on the laptop screen as I did not have a HDMI monitor, i played Babel which came free when I bought it. All seemed well, I don't have the HD screen on the laptop but it looked fine.

So on Monday my new plasma finally arrived (Samsung 5084) and I got down to trying to sort out all my connections.

I plugged the laptop into my AVR (Onyko 605) and switched it to the TV, I got a picture :) excellent I thought, but when I looked a lot of the top and left hand side of the screen was missing....

Damn I thought; then started looking in the forums and found that I had what I thought was an overscan problem. So I then downloaded Pstrip and started to play with that but no help.

Then I suddenly realized I was being an idiot as I had not set the picture size on the TV, it has 16:9 4:3 WIDE and Just Scan. Once I switched the TV to Just Scan got a full screen :D

So then I tried playing a HDDVD, naively I thought it would be that easy...first I got the HDCP error which is the HDMI protection saying I cannot play a HD DVD over HDMI  .

So after some more forum searching I end up downloading anydvdHD which removes the HDCP protection, excellent...progress at last becasue now I can actually play the DVD.

I was playing the DVD in HP quick Play as I did not have anything else on the laptop that could play HD DVD but it was really choppy and stuttering a lot on the plasma :(

So then I end up downloading a copy of PowerDVD Ultra as I think it is my player that has a problem. So I try to play Babel again but now when I fire up the actual film part of the DVD it is flashing green every second... The titles play fine but the film is all screwed up.

So now I am really getting annoyed, I think it is my video driver which is a NVIDIA geForce Go 7600 so I go off hunting for that...can I find it NO!!!.

I eventually after an hours searching find a french site that claims to have it, so I download and install it and try and fire up PowerDVD....wait for it....as soon as I try and play the HD DVD it blue screens  I try this 3 times to make sure it is really a problem and each time it blue screens.

I end up backing out the driver and that at least lets me play the DVD albeit with green flashes.

I end up trying the only other HDDVD I have 300 and that works absolutely fine on my Plasma  so I have no idea what is wrong with Babel.

Before I started messing around at least it played in HP Quick Play with no green flashes, now it has the green flashes...???

So tonight I will try and watch 300 and see if there are any problems, it was too late last night by the time I had tried everything to watcha DVD i just went to bed!

I have been having the same issue. I have also recorded some video using windows media with the digital cable tuner. Even this playback is choppy through the HDMI port. What a wast of money if we can not use this laptop on our plasmas. And just for your notes, my plasma is a Pioneer. I have not tried to install Any DVD on this machine. I keep checking but let me know if you find anything.

AnyDVD is pretty good, it removes all the protection of the HDDVD (for backup purposes of course :) that includes the HDCP stuff which meant I could play the HDDVD through my Plasma.

I have been reading up on the forums and it sems there is a problem with PowerDVDHD and Mpeg4 HDDVDs like Babel. 300 is not Mpeg4 and plays fine but Babel is still coming up in green flashes.

I bought my laptop so I could play HDDVD through my Plasma, I thought it would be a simple case of plugin the HDMI and off you go, I even bought an Onyko 605 with the HDMI switching to make things easier. At this point in time I am thinking I wasted money paying the extra for the HDDVD in my laptop and should have just bought a stand alone player....

Anyone else having problems like this?

SOMEONE HELP ME! :( I replied to this post because its the only thing I've found even remotely similar to my problem. I just bought the DV9260NR with the HD DVD drive and I cant get it to work. My boyfriend is the compu-wiz and he's been searching all over the internet and updating drivers, looking for support and nothing! I can get regular DVDs to play but not HD DVDs. Does anyone know why? Am I missing a step somewhere?
