I have a dv9590ea notebook with HD DVD drive (Toshiba TS-L802A) that will not play HD discs when an HDMI cable is connected. The HD disc will play fine on the notebook screen if there is no cable connected and a standard DVD will play OK on the screen and via the HDMI to a connected TV.

BUT, Whenever the HDMI cable is connected, the HD disc stops playing and the message "The content is protected. The content is not allowed to display in the current mode" is displayed.

I have contacted HP support and on their advice have updated Quickplay and installed k-lite codec pack but nothing has changed.

Surely I'm not the only one that has an HP notebook with HD drive? Has anyone else seen this problem or recognise something that is wrong? Do I need to update the firmware for the dvd drive?

    Any help, please.

ive heard that a feature of HDMI is HDCP (HD content protection) this might be preventing you from outputting the display via HDMI

    Thanks for the replies.

    1 HDCP
I also think this may be the problem but HP support say not. Am I right that all HDMI connections are HDCP compliant, and the notebook/drive should also be compliant as they are sold by HP with the advertised capability to output HD content to a TV. Is anyone out there managing to do this? The latest advice from HP is that they will replace the drive but I am not expecting this to resolve the problem.

2 Any DVD. I'm not clear - is this to allow backup of hddvd or does it also enable the disc to play? - I cannot see this explained anywhere. I'm trying to play the disc with HP Quickplay - does AnyDVD need me to also install another player like PowerDVD?

    Thanks again

All anydvd does is make the disc look like its not copy protected. So it would probably output fine.. but it should anyways with HDMI.. Hopefully you won't have to go the anydvd route.

hi there i too have the same laptop and problem and have been looking for answers
the hd dvd i have is the last samurai
do u also get the hd dvd being jittery when just playing normally on the laptop?
i cannot help u with the error but someone told me to get the anydvdhd thing as mentioned above but havent got round to it.. he said there was a 21 day free trial so could just use that. apparently it puts the HD dvd onto your hardrive therefore u dont have issues with this HDCP problem

as mentioned in my reply it is just jittery when playing normally so hopefully outputting it onto a display when let it run smoothly

sorry for all the questions but to pay so much for a laptop and then the main feature to not work is a bit annoying

    cheers for any replies

    Chaz

Once its on your HD, there is no copy protection left. If there were, it would not allow you to copy it in the first place. Just remember your talking about some big a##! files to copy.. over 20 gigs no doubt. Does this happen with all HD DVD or just certain titles that have issues with HDCP?

I too experienced this same exact error. It does, 100% have to do with HDCP. Straight from HP's FAQ's:

"To play an HD DVD, you need hardware and software that support both high-definition video and its copy protection methods. DVD specifications allow video output to only one display at a time. You may have to change your computer main display mode setting."

    Link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c00845844&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&dlc=en&lang=en

The steps to get it to work 100% everytime:

1.) Start the movie in quickplay, minimize quickplay

2.) Go into Nvidia Control Panel (or whatever you have - ATI, etc.) and change the default monitor to your tv.

3.) Go back into quickplay, ensure movie is still playing

4.) Hit "Function" ("FN") and press number 4 or 5 (I don't have lappy in front of me) but hit the one with the little screen label. This will force the hdmi output to only one screen. Hit it until it is only on your tv.

    5.) Enjoy HD goodness!

Thanks all for the help - especially the recommended fix, I'll try this tonight and report back.
Amazing though as HP support have suggested all sorts of other fixes and have now arranged courier to take the notebook away for repair!

:) Excellent woods3336, I've sorted it with your help.

Not exactly the same procedure as you gave but all down to selecting the TV via the nvidia control panel, it seems that the content protection will not allow two screens to display at the same time.

I cannot play the dvd in quickplay first as you did, or use Fn F4 to switch between displays.
Instead I have to force detection of tv and select this as single monitor. Then play the dvd in quickplay and all OK.
It amazes me that HP support couldnt even suggest this. I thought I'd tried all these options but clearly only one sequence works.

ectogamat/chaz - sorry but I don't see any jittering as you describe but have not watched any dvd for any period of time as yet - all looks good so far.
