I had my laptop replaced because it had dead pixels literally all over the place. I just got my replacement laptop and I noticed that it's making the same weird HD noise that my previous laptop was making. It's a hiccup-like sound, and I find it very obtrusive, as I can hear it even when watching TV on my laptop. My previous laptop had Hitachi 250GB, and my new one has Hitachi 120GBX2, so I'm now hearing them in surround.

I've never used a 2.5-inch HD before, and I'm wondering if this sound is typical of these hard drives. I got WD Passport 320 GB last week, and it makes the same noise immediately after it has finished transferring data. My PMP, which uses a 1.8-inch HD, makes a noise (more like a tick) when it begins to idle, but it's much less audible.

I've recorded the noise and uploaded it:
    http://www.zshare.net/audio/6995468231e52f/

You can either download it or listen to it on the site. FYI, it's the sound you hear at 00:03. I'm wondering if any of you're getting this noise.

    Thanks

I get that noise on my notebook as well. I have looked around and people are saying it is the CPU going to a power down cycle, but I get that even when I am playing a game. Some people use to say it was the hard drive, but lately I have found a lot of thread saying it is the CPU.

I have a dell laptop for work, and it has a noise similar to yours. The laptop has worked fine since day 1, so it must just be the way the HDD was built. If you notice the sound getting any worse than you might have a problem.

Yes, it's definitely coming from the hard drive because I also get that noise from my portable WD 2.5" drive. I guess I have to live with this. Thank you all for your input.

It was something I never heard before I got this Dell laptop, but for me, the longer I used this laptop the less I noticed it.
