I just received my DV9500t yesterday and have been messing around with it for a bit now. I ordered the HDMI port on the laptop because when I get a HDTV I would like to connect my laptop to it, but heres the question:
Can I hook my PS3 or some other HD system upto my laptop and play it on my screen? Are there any capabilities of the HDMI port besides connecting the laptop to a HDTV?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

You received a notebook with an HDMI OUTPUT. All it does is send a signal from the notebook to a receiver. It cannot receive a signal on the notebook. For that, you would need an HDMI-capable TV Tuner card, and I'm not sure if those are available yet.

HDMI without a HD/Blu-Ray player?
-
@kanehi:
A lot of notebooks are offering HDMI outputs now...it nicely circumvents the whole problem of how to hook up a notebook to a home theater system -
You can get a HD-DVD player or HD-DVD Burner on the DV9500t, which is what I have. The HD-DVD player/burner wasn't worth the $500. Blu-Ray is the future in my opinion, and I'm not going to waste the money on the HD-DVD.
I can't wait until I get my HDTV so I can play my games on the nice 42" LCD screen! I mean think about it, you have a wireless keyboard and mouse, your laptop is over on your desktop, and your playing a game on huge TV Screen which will be the same quality as your laptop HD screen. -
An HDMI port is also the equivalent to a DVI port, so you can use it to hook up to an external LCD. You just need a small, cheap converter for the cable.

True Orev, but I bet you get a lot better quality picture and sound going through the laptop HDMI to a HDMI port on a TV. I used to connect my desktop to the TV all the time to play movies or shows, its a very nice feature.

Either way, the video signal is DIGITAL, so the quality will be identical. Audio might be better. -
And why not upscaling your dvds to 1080p and sending them to your TV via HDMI? -
I believe there's an external Blu-Ray player out but it's so expensive! For now I use a PS3 to play Blu-ray for my HDTV. Can't wait for the PS3 TV tuner and recorder so I can use it like a TiVo.

i know this is probably a stupid question, but would it be possible to swap out my current dvd drive on my dv9500t for an hddvd drive later on the down the line when prices drop? I would have loved an hd dvd drive, but the price was just prohibitive.
I disagree with a previous poster who said that blu-ray is the future, if you read sites like engadget, they see the format war as pretty much tied late in the game which means we may see formats side by side for the duration of the format generation. Paramount pictures just went exclusively hd dvd for example. -
The battle of HD vs Blu-ray will be on for awhile. Blockbuster went for Blu-ray. Blu-ray has more capacity than HD. Sony is a BIG company and guess they were a sore loser with Betamax! LOL What a way of getting back at the VHS camp! Hope there's no problem in swapping a Blu-ray player with the DVD. And hopefully they can make use of that darn express card slot by having a HDMI output through it. Common HP wassup!

@patscru:
As long as they offer HD-DVD and/or blu-ray drives for the DV9500t, you can definitely swap out drives once the prices drop. It is generally simplicity itself to swap out optical drives. -
thanks, thain....can't wait.
Had another question,
Since the screen resolution of the dv9500t is 1680x1050, would i be able to spit out HD video files i have at 1080p? 1920x1080 is higher than the native resolution on our displays, and i'm wondering if my gfx card (8600m 512) is up to it...? Also, if i am able to spit out 1080p, is there anything i would have to change in my display settings, or would the vid card detect the display and adjust accordingly? -
There is no image quality difference between DVI and HDMI because as far as video goes DHMI is DVI.

I have the dv9500 with HDMI port (not Blu-Ray or HD drive) and a Pioneer 5070HD plasma TV 1080 p . . .
What 25 foot cable would you all recommend I purchase so I can connect the two, then watch movies off my computer and use the computer's great sound system?
I have been looking at this one . . .

Any recommendations? -
25 ft would be considered a long run i think. There's a review here of some long run cables: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/hdmi-cab...about-monster-cable-+-grand-finale-282725.php
monoprice seems to get good reviews, and seems to be comparable in quality to monster cables, for much much less money. -
Thanks, I really appreciate the heads up!
