I have an HP Pavillion dv9000. This laptop has an HDMI port and I was wondering if this port is input, output, or both.

I'd really like to hook up my xbox 360 to the high definition screen, is that possible?

    Thank you for your help.

1024x768, which isn't that bad. Better than TV.

yes, but the xbox 360 won't let you set it to HD (720p or 1080i) unless it detects an HD monitor. If I just plug into my laptop with normal AV cords, i don't think it will detect that its HD and I'll be forced to play with decreased graphics. The main reason I would want to play on my laptop is for the HD capabilities, so I need a way to plug into the laptop with either HD component or HDMI if possible.

Then I guess I'll just assume that I can't do it. But why would HP not make it HDMI input as well? If its an hd screen, why not take advantage of that?

    *Sigh*

I'm planning on purchasing a dv6500t, and i would like to know the benefits of the HDMI port. I plan to use an LCD TV as a monitor. Would connecting the laptop to the TV using the HDMI port make it noticeably clearer, versus connecting with the normal "monitor" port on the laptop or the S-Video?

Yes, depending on the quality of your lcd screen (Which, if it has an hdmi input, that probably means its somewhat decent). I think HDMI is like the best way to connect. But, thats just the word on the street.

You would really get much use out of the HDMI if you ponied up for the HD DVD option that way you can play the DVDs on your HD plasma or what ever since playing them on the laptop screen won't do them justice.

if only i had an hd plasma screen... :(

If i'm too cheap to pay for the hd dvd player, you think I'm loaded enough to have a 47" 1080p monitor?

Let me explain to you my situation. Other than this laptop, the only other screen I have is a 13" tube with crappy speakers and its HUGE. I need HD!!! I was so happy when I realized my laptop was hd capable. But, noooo... HP only serves the lucky, rich people who already have an additional HD screen.

I use my tv-tuner to connect my PS2 and play that way, but it accepts/displays the image as 480i. My tuner can accept HD OTA broadcasts, but as for inputs, i cant do better than 480i.
What you want is a tv tuner that is capable of accepting component or hdmi (if your 360 is 31337) input. I'm not sure if they make any tuners with component/hdmi inputs that would work on a laptop. That <s>would</s> should work, though.

Is this HDMI 1.3 or 2.0? Also, what exactly does HDMI do? I'm guessing it's a way to play stuff from your computer on a TV with higher quality?

The HDMI port on the HP laptops is most likely HDMI 1.2. Only a few device have HDMI 1.3 yet (ie: PS3 and some blu-ray/hd-dvd players). Version 1.3 has higher bandwidth vs 1.2 which allows for "higher" color depth and newer less compressed audio standards.

As for what is HDMI...it's just a newer digital A/V connection standard. It carries digital audio + video (ie: Dolby Digital/DTS + HD video signals) in a single small easy to use cable rather than having to have a separate coax/optical audio cable + a separate component or DVI cable for video. Most new DVD/video game consoles/cable boxes/HDTVs/AV receivers have HDMI now. HDMI is also compatible with DVI video with the use of simple adapter, but you lose the audio since DVI is video only.

Is it possible to do a dual monitor setup using hdmi port converted to dvi, or is the only option for that the vga port?

You can convert HDMI to DVI (since they are the same) but I can't guarantee the mobo can out to two sources (your VGA and HDMI)
