I purchased dv5-1003nr today at Best Buy. I'm having problem getting Dolby Digital/DTS bistream out of this notebook while playing DVD/Blu-Ray in Quick Play connected to external receiver over HDMI port. I enabled DTS and DD in sound settings but when I try to verify the sound by clicking on play button it it says receiver isn't capable of it which isn't right. My laptop is connected to Onkyo 805 that I use as a pre-amp that supports not only DD and DTS but also Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master. I know that dv5-1003nr won't support DD TrueHD nor DTS HD Master. Perhaps the problem is with Quick Play, Audio Output settings only has SPDIF (external docking station is required) and Analog 2 channel. No options available for HDMI though. I'll try to install Power DVD 8.0 to see what can be done.

I've installed Power DVD 8.0 today. No luck with Power DVD either. I switched "Audio" settings "speaker environment" to "use HDMI" and changed "output mode" to "AC3/DTS pass-through" from default PCM. When I hit play and go back to this setting it changes back to PCM. Seems like ATI 3200 is having the problem with HDMI handshaking. For some reason it doesn't recognize that my receiver is capable of AC3/DTS bistream.
BTW HDMI Audio Out is disabled on my receiver, so it's not like it's trying to be compatible with my TV set. With the same settings PS3 has no problem outputing DTS/AC3 or MPCM.

I am trying to connect my HP dv5-1003nr to my Samsung HDTV. I cloned the screen and can see the desktop on my HDTV, but for some reason, when I insert a Blu-Ray DVD and try to play through HP Quickplay, it says "cannot play in this display setting, content is protected." Any ideas what to do? Is there another program I could use to play the DVD? I was deciding between this laptop and another and chose this one because of the Blu Ray, but if it's going to act shady, I'll just go back and get the other one. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You can not play HDCP protected content in the clone mode. Switch it to TV only mode and you should have no problem playing it.

I had the same problem at first. You can't mirror the desktop on the tv, you have to swith the settings to the tv is now your monitor and the blu ray plays fine.

I managed to get DD and DTS to work with my DV5-1003NR by uninstalling High Definition audio device in the device manager (the top one) and installing ATI HDMI audio device (realtek). If you uninstall IDT High Definition Audio codec mute button won't turn orange once you enable mute. Then go to control panel/sound and highlight Realtek HDMI output then click configure select supported formats tab and put a check mark next to Dolby Digital and DTS. Then in Power DVD click configuration - Audio tab - Speaker environment change it to HDMI (HDMI device receiver/preamp-processor should be connected at this time otherwise HDMI option isn't there) and switch the output mode to AC3/DTS passthrough. You can downlad ATI HDMI driver here:
