I have a pretty old HP dv3600 that I use to connect to my tv via hdmi, a few days ago a problem started where it wouldn't detect the tv anymore.

no driver changes (it has a Nvidia 9300gs).

since this was bought 2008-2009 it's not covered by warranty anymore.
I also tried hooking my desktop to the tv and the hdmi ports are working fine for both my desktop and the tv.

if ever there's a problem on the hdmi port of the laptop, is there a chance I could still fix it without replacing the mother board?

If it is just an issue with the connections at the port, you can fix it if you are handy with a soldering iron. Sometimes just squeezing together the HDMI cable ends can fix issues. Not too much of a squeeze. But just enough so you can see a slight dip in the middle of the connector.

I had that issue with my DV5 connected to my Sony XBR TV. Squeezed the end of the cable and issue was gone.

Would it be possible if in case the port is broken to have it replaced by a technician without replacing the whole motherboard? like solder it out and replace with a new port)

Before you start delving into replacing components, you may want to test your laptop with more than one monitor. Odds are likely that your first assumption is the right one - but you never know... Also, have you ruled out the HDMI cable itself? Awhile of tugging and pulling on cable ends can eventually take it's toll.

As far as replacing the port - it can be done. Quite easily.

yup, tested the cable on another laptop and desktop pc, all the ports on the TV detected it and automatically switched to HDMI.

so I'm leaning towards a hardware issue, I'll try to reformat windows 7 on it and see if does anything by installing fresh drivers.
