I own a DV9740US laptop with a blue ray player...My tv does not have HDMI -- it has a DVI connector. I purchased a DVI connector for the HDMI cables. I am trying to play my blueray movies on the laptop to watch on my tv, but I am not able to get my tv to replicate what is on my lap top. Please help!!!!!

is your tv HDCP enabled? I'm not sure about the HDCP requirement if you transfer the image from PC, but from BD player or PS3 you need a HDCP-enabled TV or monitor to display the image on the screen...

What is HDCP? All I know is my notebook has a HDMI connection, and the TV has DVI... I have tried for days and am really upset that I cannot get the tv to display from my laptop

What are you clicking on to get the picture on the TV? Using Display Settings - 'Connect to a Projector or external display' on the left. I can assume so and its not working? I have very similar dv9774ca with BluRay and HDMI, but I have HDMI on the TV. I have not tried a BluRay DVD yet, just playing stuff I downloaded. (TV shows).

Nilst, I have tried the Display settings and it's not working. The LG tv is about 5 years old. I have called LG and HP and have not no luck. I have updated all software on the computer, and even played around with the settings on my TV. You would think if you have the HDMi with the DVi, you would have to set the TV on the DVI setting and it work. I have spoke to LG and mentioned that there seems to be a HDCP compatibility issue, but LG keeps telling me that it cannot be done with the HDMI/DVI cables. Any more suggestions???? :(

It is an HDCP issue. You need to find the manual or get more info regarding the DVI input on your tv. There are 3 types of DVI inputs - 1.) DVI-D 2.) DVI-A 3.) DVI-I Intigrated. Look here:
    http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/dvi-cables.html

It sounds to me like your DVI input is DVI-A which is analog only.

From that website: "It is not possible to go from a digital signal to an analog signal - i.e. from a DVI-D source to a DVI-A display connection or vice-versa."

I know you have hdmi, but in this case, think of it as being DVI-D and you're trying to plug in to a DVI-A input on your tv.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I conclude you have an analog DVI input......

If you find that your DVI input is indeed DVI-D or DVI-I then we can go from there..... :)

hummm... i have an lg 42 in lcd, but im using hdmi to hdmi.

you should be able to use an hdmi to dvi cable.

you should hear a sound once you connect the tv to the laptop. do you hear this sound??

and it's best to set the display resolution to something like 800x600 first. so the tv will actually come on if it works. then start changing the resolution.

and do you have the tv set to dvi or pc?
and do you have the model number of your tv?

and you will need to enable extending monitor to second display.

you can try the key combos for the laptop ((fn + f4) on an dv9700) which will also change the video selection.

and let us know if anything changes...

If you have an oppurtunity to, I would test the laptop with an hdmi to hdmi cable on a capable tv/monitor to make sure this is a TV issue.

Also, can you give us a bit more detail as to what steps you are taking exactly when attempting to hook up the laptop to your tv.

Unless I am misunderstanding this, no he shouldn't, DVI does not carry audio and he must enable it first.

This brings up a good point - what is the native resolution of your tv? Is it lcd, plasma, etc.?

These would be very helpful to know.....

This will be fine to replicate the screen and get it working, but won't work on blu-ray playback as HDCP requires that the image be on one monitor only. Actually, this could be the issue (it can be so many things anyway). Ensure that you are in the nvidia control panel, hook up your lappy to tv, see if you now have an a drop down box listing your tv and the lappy display. Change it to single monitor, and select your tv.....

i meant the computer beep sound it makes when connecting a new device and not sound through the cable... and as for audio, that would be from his headphone jack to the tv, but was hoping he wouldn't have to go that way.

Before playing any movies (close any and all media players), try to get just your desktop image to show up on the TV. Connect the cables, make sure the TV is set to the DVI input, then press "Fn-F4" once and wait 5 seconds. If it does not show up, press "Fn-F4" again and wait again. If that doesn't work, right-click on the desktop, select "Personalize", then "Display Settings". Do you see one black box or two? They should have big numbers in them, like "1", "2". Click on "2" (which may be grayed out), and then check the box "Extend the desktop onto this monitor". If only one box, leave all the cables plugged in and reboot your computer.

You want to get the picture from your desktop on the TV first, then worry about the movies. MAKE SURE TO DO THIS WITH ALL MEDIA PLAYER SOFTWARE CLOSED. Also take the disc out of the computer. Blu-ray contains content protection, and may not play unless all components support the same protection. Using an HDMI-DVI cable eliminates the content protection, so if the movie you are trying to watch is protected, you cannot watch it using the DVI connector.
