Anyone here use their HDTV as an external monitor through HDMI?
What quality are you getting? Good enough for gaming? If so what brand tv and info info info. Will it support the resolutions or lag in any way?
My HDMI cables should be arriving soon and i will be testing it on the HDTV we have on our lounge room which is a 32" Samsung LCD 1366x768res. If all goes well im gonna buy another one for my room as a tv and my lappys external monitor. If not, i will look for another brand that might support it better.
I also noticed theres multiple ways of connecting it to a tv. I saw the 3 hdmi ports, a VGA port, Composite and standard RCA. Im guessing HDMI will have the best results.
Cheers
-
Quality is whatever the resolution of the TV is, either 720 or 1080.
-
HDMI should definitely have the best quality. I use composite from my laptop cos I dont have a HDTV.
Grand Admiral -
Im guessings its 720 resolution. Is that enough for gaming & watching movies? Pretty much an external monitor's use & capabilities.
-
Well, your laptop's screen is 1280x800, while 720 is 1280x720.
-
Depending upon who you speak with - some say that 1080p is far better than 720p. Others say that you have to be at a very specific distance from the screen for the human eye/brain to tell the difference between the two.
HDMI is nice because it allows for 1080p and also carries audio signals. But there have been some issues with getting the Windows desktop to align properly (can be fixed with driver updates).
If you have 7-pin S-video on your laptop AND have an Nvidia video card you can get an adapter to got from S-Video to component & get 1080p resolution, but then need to feed audio from your headphone jack.
I've have gotten both to work and both look good.
Do a search for HP to HDTV and ou'l find a few threads on the subject.
Good Luck -
I have a 7pin ,9pin? (what ever the other pin is) s-video and composite out on my quickdock. Ive used the 7pin before and it looked like crap on my SD TV. I think i will stick with the latest HDMI technology.
It would be much alot easier though if HDMI out came into quickdock so i dont have to plug an extra cable into my laptop. I like my 1 cable solution at the moment.
Its either a 32" HDTV or a 22" external monitor i have to choose between. Hopefully HDTV works out so i can have a nice tv in my room too. Thats why i need to know if its good enough to act as an external monitor -
720 resolution is 1280 x 720. Doing the math gives your 720 over 62 percent higher resolution picture.. yeah, your definitely going to notice that. But for viewing HD the bigger the screen the better. You will notice the advantage of the higher res on the 32" more then on the 22". -
Okay i just recieved my HDMI cable and quickly tried it out with games and movies..
I nearly wet my pants at the quality and resolution. Reflection perfection and it was easy plug and play with no problems. Definately buying one next week...
Took a photo with camera phone, pretty bad lighting..Attached Files:

I LOVE using the HDMI on my 8510p with my Samsung 32" LNT3253. The difference between watching anime on a 15.4" laptop versus my 32" is very large. Well that, and I usually hook up my laptop to my surround for even greater effect. However, it looks like I'm a little late. Anyway if you have the same TV cnet has some good settings for it. If you need the link just ask.
-
Yes just a little late but still welcome
I was actually watching Bleach ep160 on the photo I posted,. I agree anime’s look way better (quality and color) on HDTV
Please give me the link to the settings, this will really come in handy as I never really got to change the color settings -
hmm when i connect my DV2500t to my hdtv using hdmi cable, the screen refresh rate drops to like 29 Hz from 60 Hz. is that a problem with my tv or with my computer? the screen on the tv just becomes kinda laggy..
-
My refresh rate switches to 29hz too but it doesnt seem to lag. What tv is it? Have you tried a different HDMI cable by any chance?
I noticed the nvidia control panel lets you change the tv resolution to what ever u want. I went higher to 1386x760 and it looked alot better than before since the icons are smaller and finer. Im guessing the higher i put the res the more it will lag
Im just having issues when i plug the hdmi cable in, my laptops res automatically changes to 1280x720 and all my desktop icons get messed up for some reason. Anyone know how to fix the settings permanently?Attached Files:

nah i have only used one hdmi cable. hmm it's a pioneer. i can't rmb the model name. ijust know it's been almost 3 years since i got that. i also have an overscan problem. there's another problem that i can't really explain in words. it's something like, when i play a video, there seems to be like 2-3 lines...they are like cutting the screen. it's quite obvious but then..i dun think i did a good job explaining it.
hmm yeah same for me..the laptop screen res changes to 1024x768... -
My laptop didn't like HDMI without the ATI control panel installed, so it wasn't working until recently. But since then I've connected my comp to a 46" Daytek a few times and the quality is stunning.
When plugging in, the ATI CCC asks me whether I want to make the HDTV an external or a single monitor, what resolution, etc. Then I just switch the audio output and I'm good to go -
Here's the settings for the Samsung LNT3253H: http://help.cnet.com/9602-12576_39-0.html?messageID=2509983
I really like this calibration. -
Rather than start a new thread I though I'd ask my question here. I have a 52" Toshiba DLP and am able to get the picture from my laptop to it through HDMI. However, I can't figure out the audio. What setting do I have to adjust to get the sound from the laptop to the TV. I am using Windows Media Player for movies but am getting no sound. Thanks for the help.
-
1. Control panel
2. Click on sounds and audio devices
3. Click on audio tab
4. Under sound playback change default to Digital Optical Device
I think that's roughly what you do. I'm a little foggy on the details, but I know you change something to Digital Optical Device. I think you may need to have the HDMI plugged into your TV when you do this. -
-
Thanks for the settings jin07. Do you have any other settings? I like to put the color mode on Cool1 or 2 . The colors still seem to be a little off, like theres soemthing wrong with the dark colors, yellowish color and brightness. I thought i could fix this by fine tuning the settings. -
I don't really have any other settings for it since those work well for me. Those settings are only really good for the color mode they specify. You can't just change the color mode and keep everything else because that ruins the other settings. If your still unhappy about the way your TV looks after doing all those adjustments, you may want to do a self-calibration. Here's some tips: http://help.cnet.com/tv_calibration...eID=2505045&tag=tip-2505045&kw=tv+calibration
I'm sure there's more stuff out there for self-calibration. -
I havent actually had time to make major adjustments. Ive just been using the presets (dynamic, standard, movie) and just editing the settings a little. The movie pre-set seems to make the screen darker and yellowish.
I dont really know what the other settings do, thats why i dont touch it. I only know the basic stuff. That tv calibration thing looks really helpful. Thanks, will try that out when i get home. I think its contrast thats the issue -
Definitely use all of the calibration settings. If you just use a few, you aren't actually calibrating your set. It would be similar to adjusting your car to you by only moving the seat while forgetting to move the rear view mirror, side mirrors, belt, air conditioning vents, and steering wheel. For another car analogue, while I procrastinate writing up a lab report, imagine adjusting your mirrors with the car seat pushed all the way forward. When you move your seat back to where you usually put it, the mirrors would be mis-aligned. The presets are pretty off-color, especially the dynamic. The dynamic on mine washes everything over with a light shade of blue. The settings I linked are for dark rooms. You typically don't want to watch TV in a really bright room. For instance, you don't angle the sun to directly hit the screen while watching tv.
If you really don't feel comfortable changing those settings:
1. Write down settings already used
2. Change settings to the calibrated settings found in link
That way, you can always change them back. Trust me, use all of the settings in a darkened room and you will get a substantially better picture. When I watched the West Wing and LOTR before and after calibration, there was a very large change. -
I can clearly define whats wrong with the colors now. The INTENSITY of dark colors/shades are very high. Which setting do i change to fix this?
I noticed the presets dont make the tv look at its best. Ive only spent about 5mins last night googling around with the settings. I will spend more time on it today. I usually keep my room dark, i will be facing the TV against my window.
I need to make sure i solve the little problems before i buy another one of these tv's as a dedicated external monitor for my room. -
I'm pretty sure that's brightness. I still strongly suggest you try the settings I posted earlier. I haven't found anything better for a darkened room.

Hi, all..
Looking at everyone here had great success with HDMI..
Need some help instead, i cant seems to get my 8710p HDMI to work with my Philips PF7321/32 HD READY TV.
I am using
WINXP SP2
NVIDIA latest driver for NVS320.
just nothing happen when i connect the cable to the TV.. the nvidia control panel doesnot seems to recognize the tv at all and so is the lappy. any help?
thanks in advance.. -
Have you tried a different cable to begin with?
It should detect it as soon as you plug it in and give you viewing options.
Is your drivers from the Nvidia website or www.laptopvideo2go.com? -

I just bought an HD TV with HDMI inputs. I'm wondering how I can connect my HP DV9000 series with my TV.
The TV has a regular computer input for a monitor, but I'd like to get a superior quality. What kind of output would I need from my laptop?
Do you guys have an HDMI output on your laptops? Is that how you're doing it? -
Yup. What kind of ports do you have on your laptop and on your TV?
-
Unfortunately youll need HDMI output built-in on your laptop to get awesome hi def quality.
Other possible inputs are S-Video, Composite and VGA -
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&product=3439691&os=2093&rule=45273&lang=en
It has an S-video out.
Is that going to be my only option to connect to my TV? My TV supports SVideo, HDMI, Component & RGB PC.
I appreciate your help. -
thanks for the help.. will try tonite.. never have another cable actually..
(i spend 40sgd for the cable..)
thanks again cheers! -
40 bucks huh. u could have always gone to sim lim tower and bought it for much cheaper. i bought mine for 18 sgd i think
-
haha... yeah.. just to lazy to drop into town for that.. i live in north part.. so..
, still without luck for the connection... i tried.. restart tv and laptop respectively but still...
any further help? -
Use the laptopvideo2go.com drivers. These are performance desktop drivers modified to work on laptops. It will give you more options and compatibility
-
Kalwren: Yup just use the S-video if that's all you have on your laptop. Know that you aren't getting the best picture possible. Well, with that laptop you are, but I think you know what I mean.
-
Okay ive tried fixing up my tv color settings and its very very hard to get the right setting. I managed to fix the colors while playing CSS but when i exit to my desktop. My desktop looks weird!
I think ill have to configure the color settings individually through software (nvidia control panel, game settings)
Watching anime doesnt really make a difference at all which ever setting i use. Looks great one way or the other. Im guessing its because they mostly use basic colors to draw them -

The laptopvideo2go has modded .inf's which pretty much lets it support nearly every Nvidia Card made
This is the latest and most downloaded XP32 driver:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16154
You will see these download links in that page:
Driver | Modded INF | INF Enhancer | Quickstart Guide
1) Download the driver first
2) Unzip the downloaded driver into a folder
3) Download the Modded .inf and place this on where you unzipped the drivers
4) It will ask you if you want to overwrite the existing file. Click YES
5) Now Install it through the .exe file or whatever -
Hi All.
I hope some one will be able to help me with the following questions :
Is the "same quality " HDMI port used for all HP laptops ? Or it varies from laptops with different Core 2 duo processors from T5250 to T7300 ?
In other words is the quality of HDMI port used in laptops with T5250 processor different from the HDMI port used in T7100 /T7300 Core 2 duo processor laptop ?
Secondly, what is the quality of HDMI used in T5250 processor notebooks ?
Is it 720 or 1080i or 1080p ?
Will the HDMI quality suffer with slower Core 2 Duo processor ?
Thanks and Regards,
H.S.Brar -
They are all the same although the better your gfx card is, the better if you wanna run higher resolutions to get more screen space to fill up the tv
Im quite sure that it doesnt matter what processor you have. The quality should be the same. Its more of a graphics issue than processor
Buy a $10 HDMI cable and try for yourself, youll be suprised like me.
Please post your laptop specs and tv here or on your signature for better assistance -
Hello flipfire ,
Thanks for your response .
By the way Im very soon going to buy a new laptop with HDMI so that's why I would like to clarify the various issues before I decide on which model to buy .
Moreover at my location only the following pre configured notebooks are available :
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/en/ho/WF02a/1090709-1116637-1116665.html
Which one would you suggest ?
I'll post the laptops specifics as soon as I buy one .
Regards -
If your going for the dv2700 (14.1") or the dv6700(15.4") aslong as you get a Geforce 8400m GS w/ HDMI out it should work fine on HDTV. Processor doesnt really matter aslong as its at least 1.6ghz
If your going for the dv 9000 series then i recommend getting the geforce 8600m GT card
What are you gonna use the laptop for and whats you budget? -
I'll be using the laptop for browsing the internet(which I do a lot),watching tv via PCTV USB 2.0 external box type TV Tuner(which I already have ) and some gaming .
So which of these would you suggest :
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/en/ho/WF02a/1090709-1116637-1116665.html -
If price doesnt matter then id recommend this:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/e...116665-1116665-1116665-81136544-81249057.html -
Hi,
For me the price for http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/en...-81249057.html is no problem.
In fact,I would like to go for a similar HP Pavilion notebook with atleast T7100 and a " much better resolution" display ie atleast 1600 x 1200.Some one has told me that 1280 x 800 is not that good a resolution for 15.4 " display .
By the way, is the "same quality " HDMI port used for all HP laptops irrespective of the video card and processor used ?
Is the video quality on HDTV screen via HDMI port impacted by different graphic cards or different processors or not ?
What is the quality of HDMI used in T5250 processor notebooks ?Is the video output on HDTV screen 720 or 1080i or 1080p in this case ?
Will the HDMI quality suffer with slower Core 2 Duo processor ?
In case of these HP Pavilion dv 6703tx what will be quality of High Defination video output on the LCD screen via HDMI port and cable ? Will it be 1080i or 1080p or even less ?
Thanks for your help -

If price is not a problem then id definately go with T7000+ processor for reasons other than HDMI. You are also correct 1280x800 is more suited to 14.1" which is perfect for my screen but it doesnt matter if your gonna use the HDTV because you can change the resolution anyway
By the way, is the "same quality " HDMI port used for all HP laptops irrespective of the video card and processor used ?
Yes they will be the same. Processor actually has nothing to do with video quality
Is the video quality on HDTV screen via HDMI port impacted by different graphic cards or different processors or not ?
No, but aslong as you least get the Nvidia Geforce 8400m GS i can guarantee that you wont be dissapointed
Will the HDMI quality suffer with slower Core 2 Duo processor ?
No but if your playing a game and your processor cant handle it then it will obviously lag on both the tv and laptop
In case of these HP Pavilion dv 6703tx what will be quality of High Defination video output on the LCD screen via HDMI port and cable ? Will it be 1080i or 1080p or even less ?
You can change this on the Nvidia Control Panel. It has a special menu that lets you configure the video formats and resolutions specially for HDTV
Thanks for your help
No Problem -
Hello flipfire ,
You have written :
By the way which is best video quality output 720,1080i or 1080p ?Is it 1080p ?
Can every HP Pavilion notebook deliver this best quality output on the HDTV via HDMI ?
Thanks and Regards -
ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
Hey guys,
I have run into an issue connecting my 24" LCD monitor via HDMI. I can get everything recognized but the picture is awful.
Now I know that the monitor looked great when I had my E1705 hooked up via HDMI -> DVI. Only problem is that my new HP laptop only has an HDMI port along with my monitor (no DVI ports).
Did I get a lemon HDMI cable?
