I recently sent my HDX 18 out to be repaired as it was experiencing random shutdowns, screen issues and keyboard failure. I just received it back and they had replaced the motherboard, fan, screen and keyboard. After using it for a short time and installing the few pieces of software I use (I use the system mainly as a work computer in my home office with the occasional star craft 2 matches) the HDX started shutting down again.

The shutdowns I am experiencing are hard shut downs, as if someone unplugged the computer when it had no battery in it or as if you held the power button till the system shuts down and makes a loud pop from the speakers. That is exactly what the system is doing, shutting down hard like it lost power.

I sent this laptop out to HP with the hopes that the shutdowns would be resolved along with the other issues. The whole laptop is working perfectly after receiving it back (all other problems resolved) except the random shut downs which make the laptop almost impossible to use.

The shut downs are unrelated to heat and is totally random, as the laptop will shut down while simply web browsing. I have a 12-cell battery which props it up so it gets plenty of air circulation. At first I thought it was the batter so I have tried going back to the original battery the laptop came with but the problem still happens.

I am now waiting for another box to arrive to send it back out to HP. However, I was curious if others have experienced this issue and know of a possible fix or even something I can relay to HP.

The laptop is a HP HDX 18 with Q9300 with 8 GB of memory. Currently running Vista Home Premium.

I love this laptop, I have lots of years left with it for how I use it.. Especially now that most of the components have been replaced including the screen which is now brand new. I do not want to find another or buy another laptop but these shut downs if HP cannot resolve will force me into that situation which would be unfortunate.

Thanks for any assistance anyone can lend. If you need more information on my system please ask I will do my best to supply / answer.

Did you try running it without a battery?

Also, you should ask that they replace the power supply. There may be an issue with that.

Nothing like that on my year old HDX-18 here. Q9000. 4GB RAM. Win7 64bit I did clean install, never used Vista that came on it.

Doesn't sound good. Seems to be a power issue from the sound of it.

Oh I assumed the power supply was part of the motherboard.

    So its separate?

Yes. The power "brick" that plugs into the notebook. Get a new one of those.

I have 3 of those.. 1 in my office which is connected to a docking station, 1 that is in my bedroom which I use when I work home and another in my basement so I don't have to drag the one from the bedroom around. It has shut off using all of them since this is my main computer as I don't have a desktop.

Could it seriously still be that, all three of them need to be replaced?

No, I'd say its something with the laptop itself. Beats me what, sorry.

Does it shut down when your using it, tapping away on keys? or does it shut down also when you are not even touching it? Just wondering if somethings loose behind the AC jack....ohh, but you have the battery in though, shouldn't shut down hard like that with the battery in if the ACs broken. Maybe someone has had this happen to them and knows what it was.

Thank you for everyones responses. I really appreciate it.

It has shut down while typing and it has shut down while reading a article using the mouse to scroll.

It has also shut down while sitting in my xb4 docking station using external mouse and keyboard so nothing wa touching it.

I just likes to randomly shut down.

PS: man I wish this forum ha TapaTalk :(
