Why is my notebook overheating?
I haven't really considered operating temperatures that much since I haven't been doing any editing extensively. However, with all the talk lately about CPU/GPU temps. I was curious as to what my were. I turned on the Core Temp and notice it was a bit high but didn't give it too much concern.
Last night however, I used my notebook to watch a DVD and the temp. shot up to critical (90 C). Fortunately, I got the warning balloon and immediately powered down the system. My question is, what caused this? Before you say it, it's not the vents. That was the first place I checked to make sure they were clean and there was no blockage.
At the moment, it seems to be working properly, but now I'm afraid to use the optical drive (something I really will need) Any suggestions as to what I should check?

It could be that the fan stopped working... Or its on its way out. Maybe the heatpipe cracked. Maybe you need to dust it out?
Seems like the fan might have just siezed up on you. Check and see if its still free spinning. -
I had a few hard shut downs awhile back when I was doing some transcoding of MKV files to DVD.... which taxes the processor like 100 percent. My HDX 18 used to lay flat on my desk and the vents were dusty. Now I blow out those vents like every few weeks and I bought a must have item for the HDX 18 which is the best cooler you will find for this big notebook. Its expensive but worth every penny. Amazon.com: Zalman ZM-NC2000Black Notebook Cooler (Black): Electronics
Anyway, notebook runs nice and cool and basically I can run any app without worries. No more shutdowns either. -

The other day, I was checking some drives and noticed Nvidia listed twice. It would appear that I may have inadvertently forgot to uninstall it during my previous update. Anyway, after I did that, my laptop seem to have returned to operating as before.
I'm can't say for sure if that would have effected my laptop is such a way, but for now, it appear that was what was causing of the overheating issue. -
It's dust. It's always dust.
