I received my HDX 18 yesterday and the keyboard gets warm (enough to make your hands somewhat uncomfortable, not burning). All I was doing was catching up on all of the updates, then doing a defrag.

So my question is should I be getting a extra cooling fan for it or rig something so that the laptop is higher off my desk to help with the air flow?

I've found with most HP's that buying a 12 cell battery will lift the back of the laptop up enough to greatly improve the air flow and cooling. I have done this with every hp I've owned.. Dv9000's and Dv600-'s. I plan on doing this with my wife's G60. I can't say it will help for your model, but it can't hurt if you can afford the extra capacity battery.
