Does anyone know if its possible to replace the original, non-backlit keyboard with the new, backlit version? I called HP and they wont say it (or sell it) directly, but it is available for sale on ebay.

    Thanks

Yes! As a matter of fact there's already been a couple of threads about doing just that. I will say it's not something HP designed to be replaced by the purchaser: Even though making the connections are as simple as rain (it only took a few minutes to unscrew the keyboard and make the connections) it's next to impossible to get the bezel off (at least from the top) without damaging the laptop itself. Unless there's another way to install it (via disassembling the notebook?) I wouldn't recommend anyone try this at home.

p.s. Even though I managed to install the replacement keyboard, the process took nearly 2 hours! Again, it's not something I would have attempted if I had know what it entailed. And even with the most meticulous care, my laptop still encountered a few wear marks along the way.

I wonder if HP is willing to do the same thing for the Envy. A backlit keyboard is a sorely lacking feature on this top end laptop. I'm glad that even if it takes a little engineering know how, HDX users get an upgrade. Hope Envy users are next.

I just did it myself last week. Download the service manual from the HP site.

    A couple of tips:

    1) the keyboard bezel is a bit tricky to remove. Once you have followed the service manual and have removed the switch cover and such, push the edges of the bezel towards the rear - carefully - and work it around to unclip it. It will come out in one piece without damage.

    2) The ZIF socket for the keyboard ribbon has a black plastic clip that hinges upward to release the ribbon. Be gentle when flipping this up. If you are too aggresssive you may damage the small wire connectors in the socket.

    3) There is a spare power connector on the MB for connecting the backlight ribbon lead.

Be careful and follow the service manual - it's a great upgrade!

Sorry, but for some reason my photos won't upload. The system tells me they're too large even though i resized them to the smallest level in InfraView.

I anyone has a suggestion, I'd like to hear it?

Can anyone suggest a photo site to download the photos? I can't get mine to take on this site.

Yes the backlit keyboard can be replaced with an HP uint for about $76. or an aftermarket unit found on EbAY for only $30.

I checked with HP and have a firend on another site here at notevbook review who has an HDSX 18T who installed one he bought from EBay.

I was told it would void your warranty. No one concerned about this?

As far as the keyboard goes I would love one... guess ill have to wait for HP to change it policy on this.
