I'm having some trouble with my laptop, for some reason it is able to pick up blank CD's but not blank DVD's, tried using Google for some help but came up with a lot of different answer, so I thought I'd bring it here to see if anyone has encountered this before. Thanks

Does it read burned DVDs (not pressed ones)? If it doesn't do that either the drive is faulty.
-
I tried a burned DVD and it automatically opened the DVD contents.
-
What burning program do you use? Try different brand discs.
-
The program I was using was ConvertXtoDVD3, first I tried with a blank Lightscribe DVD and I've also tried a Maxwell DVD-R, both aren't read.
EDIT: The Cd I tried is a blank Lightscribe CD-R and that works. -
Okay so it doesn't appear in My Computer, right? Does the drive try to read the disc for a long time or does it simply stop? I still think it's the discs, maybe try a +R one.

No it doesn't appear on My Computer, it does read it for a long time and then stops. It worked fine for a while and it just stopped so I don't think it's the DVD's and I haven't installed anything DVD related or drivers. I did install the new BIOS for the HDX but that was after it stopped working hoping that it would fix it somehow.

The drive is broken. If you have a warranty, use it.
If you don't, i can teach you how to recalibrate it if you want.
It's interesting how blank DVDs are the only ones it's got trouble with, but the drive in my dv9000 is doing something similar - it won't write DVD-RWs. It'll write regular DVDs but not RW discs. I assume that's because of their low reflectivity - you can see that a RW disc is much darker than a normal recordable. Unfortunately my drive was already maxed out from the factory so i couldn't do any calibration because i would risk frying the laser and that would mean no DVDs at all. I'm just going to get a new drive when it'll be bothering me enough. -
I still have warranty on it so I guess I'll take it in, what sucks is that this happened to my HP Desktop as well, so I don't know whats going on with these drives. I'll see what the Geek Squad at Best Buy tells me.

I posted this same question on the HP Support forum on their site. The person there told me to remove some registries that might be corrupted, they asked me to go into {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and remove UpperFilters entry and if that wasn't there to remove LowerFilters entry. When I went in the registry I could not find either entry. Can someone explain this?

The HP guys are morons. Go to BB and ask about that warranty.
When a drive keeps trying to read a disc for a long time then it fails, it has NOTHING to do with the software. To prove that i am right, enter the BIOS. Open the DVD drive and put a good disc inside. After it recognizes it you will hear the drive humming at a low speed (it keeps the disc spinning after it's recognized). Now put in a blank DVD. After it struggles to read and it can't, it will stop entirely, the disc won't be spinning.
