Howdy. I am still rocking an HDX16 1370us laptop. She's old, but she is going strong and she's still my baby.

I got the no-tv-tuner option so there is a free mSATA slot. This laptop is a 2009 model.

Can I install an mSATA SSD card here and use it as boot drive? Even better, as a Smart Response Tech cache?

My girl does support Intel Rapid Storage Technology with most recent drivers, so there's that.

    Thanks!

No it won't work. The slot in question is actually a USB slot in the mPCIe form factor.
