Games like Assassin's Creed,Bioshock and Call of Duty 4 will really run nicely in the HDX 16t. Crysis and Crysis Warhead are demanding games but even then they will run at all medium settings at a resolution of say 1280x800. You can even try out games like Quake 4, FarCry,GTA San Andreas,Elder Scrolls:Oblivion. These games were released 2-4 years ago and will run nicely on the HDX16t's hardware.

I myself run Vista Ultimate 64 bit and have run all these games without a single crash or problem. Just make sure you download the 64 bit drivers for your 9600M GT from laptopvideo2.go along with the modded infs.

No problem qaz, maybe even I over-reacted. So hopefully all's well now.

Do I understand correctly? The 16t does not come preloaded w/64-bit graphics drivers? Or do you mean that the games will run better w/the 64-bit drivers? And what do the "modded infs" do? (I mean, I know what an INF is, I just don't understand why I need a "modded" one.) I'm confused...

Hey, qaz333: Is the Acer 8930 you ordered the model with the 9700 card and Blu-Ray, or is it the "lesser" model with the 9600 card? I'm asking because I can't find ANYPLACE that is currently carrying the top of the line model with the 9700 card, and if that's what you ordered, I'm wondering from where and how much?

It is a .inf extension file which is actually included with the extracted graphic drivers. The .inf file originally supports only a fixed number of graphic cards so if you use the original .inf file it won't recognize your card correctly. How ever the guys over at laptopvideo2go.com regularly modify the original .inf to make it support all mobile graphic cards. The modified .inf also supports a range of other features like Powermizer,Hibernation, etc. In my opinion the 177.92 drivers offer a great performance boost in current games. The card also runs cooler. The link for your graphic card is here:

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20271.

Download the drivers from the site, extract them to a separate folder using WinRaR or 7 Zip. Then download the modded INF and replace the one in the extracted folder with this modded one.

Not trying to be a PITA here... really, I'm not--just trying to get this stuff clear in my head.

So let me ask: Would it be correct to say that the games mentioned above will run on the HDX 16t w/the drivers and INFs it comes with (i.e. "stock" drivers), but it's just that the games will run better w/the modded drivers and INFs?

(BTW, I was a bit unclear: are both the drivers and INFs modded, or just the INFs?)

Follow-up: How much of an improvement do the modded drivers/INFs give? And if something goes horribly wrong, can I roll back to "stock" drivers?

Oldcrank - stock drivers are ones specifically made for your laptops GPU, whereas the ones at laptopvideo2go.com were originally made foe desktop cards but the modded infs allow them to be installed on mobile/laptop cards.

The main difference is that the desktop drivers are usually newer and have had some improvements/optimizations as compared to stock drivers, which are usually outdated since laptop manufacturers only roll out say one new driver per year. Desktop drivers roll out at a much faster pace.

And the modded drivers perform better than stock drivers, usually.

Okay, I'm just about there--3 more questions:

    1) Yes, I've learned that getting an updated laptop driver for anything is like pulling teeth, so I get what you're saying. So even tho the drivers are for desktop cards, the INFs have a modified instruction set that somehow allows them to work w/the laptop cards?

    2) Are there any negative issues connected w/using the desktop drivers/modded INF combo? I.e., like locking up, crashing, BSODs, etc.?

    3) How much of a performance improvement could I expect to see on my HDX 16, using the modded INFs and drivers?

I know dealing w/a n00b gamer is a pain, so I thank you for your patience.

    1. Yes, something like that.

    2. Not really. I've never experienced any issues of that nature. Usually when upgrading drivers, it's recommended to uninstall previous ones first then install new ones. Problems usually arise when people don't do this.

    3. The performance increase depends on the drivers. There are certain drivers made for specific games. Check out the forums at www.laptopvideo2go.com
