Having a problem with a HP ZV5348rs (P4/3.0) .. apparently, the system is really over-heating .. both the fans are on ALL the time, even when the system's not being used .. SpeedFan is reporting a CPU temperature of 102 degrees! .. around the time this problem started, the battery died .. would discharge very quickly .. and when I had it checked out, I was told the battery's been burnt .. so I don't want to replace it till I can get the heat/power management situation fixed first .. has anyone had a similar experience? .. when talking to the HP support, they've asked me to reinstall the "power management" bit for Windows .. but that hasn't helped .. I am able to use the computer .. it's just that it's very annoying having both the fans on all the time .. and obviously can't get another battery, for fear of having it burnt too ..

    please help!!! ..

I'd send it in for repair, it sounds like there's something wrong with teh hardware.

unfortunately, being in Pakistan, that's not a possibility .. having the laptop shipped to the States will (a) cost too much and (b) take way too long ..

I can have someone look at the laptop, locally .. but they won't be an authorized service center .. and really want to avoid having it opened for repair or whatever ..

I guess what I was hoping from this posting was to find out if (a) this could be resolved by firmware/bios updates .. if anyone's had a similar problem .. or (b) if indeed it is a hardware issue, and someone here has experienced the same thing .. I could then look into either having the laptop shipped to a service center .. or have someone, locally, look at it ..

Odds are the CPU heatsink fins are clogged with dust. Removing the cover over the CPU (see the HP service guide) will let you get to that. Be sure to remove the battery first.

If you were in America I'd say get some Arctic Silver 5 and Arctic Clean and redo the heatsink thermal compound too. Cleaning out the heatsink should be good enough though.

P4's run very, very hot. They're an appallingly bad choice for notebooks. HP wisely made the zv6000 series AMD-only.

Did you solve the heating problem? I have similiar ZV5000, and i have faced similiar problems like as you(or worse!).
ZV5000 starts with both fans runnig at full speed from the beginning. Windows loads normally about 30secs, then buff, screen goes blank. I felt the Laptop is VERY HOT at the bottom. It won't boot again until the temperature has decreased a LOT. So i cant use my ZV5000 at all :( . I'm so desperate and furiuos with this...
I live in COLD and SNOWY Finland, maybe i shoud use my ZV only outdoors at wintertimes :p

Interesting experience, do you guys mind sharing your experience in a scientific research?

Visit an online database input page that was made by me:

    http://www.sail.hr/fmea/fmea.asp

And add your experience with battery and overheating by answering to this simple questions:
    what was the component?
    what was the failure?
how often does it happen? (from 1-10)
what is the effect of the failure?
how often do you get that effect because of that failure? (1-10)

Many people already gave their numbers. I will make the results page in a month and I guess we will have some interesting information!

    Cheers, and thanks in advance,

    Ivan
