I got my envy 14 in last Dec. It has i7-720Q, 4GB DDR3, 500GB
My envy 14 was running wonderfully. But it stopped working suddenly in this afternoon. I plugged in the power and opened several websites like CNN, SFGATE.... and the Thunderbird for emails as well. Everything was fine! Then I left around 15 min to get one cup of coffee. When I came back, the laptop was already been powered off by itself. And every LED light of the laptop was off! When I was trying to reboot my envy, got nothing! No response at all.
So I did research online, and followed some procedure to remove the static electricity on the MB.
1. unplug the battery and power cord
2. push/hold POWER button for more than 30 sec
3. connect the power cord, reboot the laptop
but nothing helpful. The ENVY is still dead. No lights at all! What should I do? Call HP? Which number? I do need my laptop for working in the following days. I will appreciate any helpful comments/suggestions to fix my envy.
Thanks!

huh.
either somehow it overheated and powered down...or something bad happened and there was a surge.
if no lights are coming on at all even when you plug the cord in (not even the charge/done charging light) it may have died.
Which well, that's horrible. No clue why that would happen other than a power surge or something else incredibly unlucky. -
Thanks Magusdraco for trying to help me out.
I doubt there was a surge. We have eight computers (iMAC/PC desktop/laptop) in my office and all of them were working well except mine.
And I did not even use WORD or EXCEL. I was just doing online surfing and checking emails. I checked the output from the power adapter and it was 9.5V, which was correct. But no lights are coming on at all even when I plug in the cord.
Holy crap! I think I have to send it back for repairing and look for another laptop for my work. That's really sad. This is the first time I'm using laptop from HP (was with SONY/APPLE/TOSHIBA/Thinkpad/DELL) and I'm so frustrated. Never met this kind of accident. -

it happens sometimes.
My dad had a dell that decided to suddenly fry half a year after he bought it (the part of the motherboard that regulates voltage just died on it).
it sucks though. -
Wait, what?
9.5V is nowhere near right (unless you're talking about 19.5V). You're looking for 19V on the 90 watt smart adapter between the inside of the barrel and the outside (yes, the barrel consists of two different metal tubes. it's not just a single tube. I don't know about the center pin, but I believe it's either for signaling or neutral.
if it's really outputting 9.5V, try a new adapter. if it doesn't work, then the adapter probably fried and surged your computer. your battery charging/power supply daughterboard is probably fried if this happened.
oh, and just as an aside, dell's 19.5V adapters work with HP's laptops (with this type of barrel plug). HP sells a car adapter that outputs 19.5V, so it's safe. however, you'll get a warning saying that you may get reduced performance due to the adapter not having enough power. -

I had the exact same experience. I did everything you did. I also connected the adapter and cord to another computer that uses the same voltage to make sure that the problem was not the adapter/cord (it wasn't: the other computer started charging right up).
I called TS and advised them of what had occurred. They told me that the problem was undoubtedly a power issue with the motherboard and I would have to send it back for a new motherboard. I did (with the cord and adapter as well).
When they sent it back, they told me that "you had a bad adapter." They obviously did not bother to do any testing (turn it on, turn it off, boot, reboot, etc.) first .. because when I received it, it first turned on but would not boot. When I turned it off and tried to turn it on again..DEAD. Again.
And no, it could not have been a "power surge." We are off grid and have a very high end sine wave inverter system in our home. We never have power surges and we have lots of very expensive electronic equipment here that has worked for years.
Apparently HP has no idea how to fix this problem, nor even how to run tests to try to determine the problem, nor do QC.
I know there are a lot of smart people here in these forums. Do any of you have any idea? I am trying to get them to give me a refund or a replacement but the "case manager" is dicking around with me. I was promised a refund but then he reneged and said I will "probably" have to have it "repaired" again.
Can anybody come up with any ideas to tell HP's repair people what to do? They seem not to know. I am not a techie and can't diagnose it.... -
Strange. I had this problem back in November. I brought my laptop to class one day, pressed the power button only to find it wasn't booting up. Took the battery in/out, fiddled around with other buttons to no avail. Sent it in and they fixed it. Repair order form just said "reassembled."

Thanks eafd, [email protected] and zeth006 for all your comments!
Regard to the output of my adapter, I measured it again and the output is 19.5 V between the inside of the barrel and the outside (BTW, 9.5 V between the center probe and the outside of the barrel). So the adapter is working well. I also borrowed another good adapter from my friend and it does not work on my laptop. OMG, I think the problem is really on the motherboard.
I'm going to contact HP to send it back for repairing. That sucks. I have many data/programes/files on the laptop. I did the backup and nothing lost. But right now I have to work on a old and low laptop to finish my work.
I will update the status of my case.
