After I got to campus today, it appears that my notebook can smashed in just the right place and now I have a swath of damaged pixels! I really feel embarrassed about this, but I'm not contacting HP about this until I'm sure I cannot fix it myself.

I remember there was some type of video or program that would rotate the colors of the LCD screen really really fast, and that combined with a little rubbing of the screen would help to bring stuck pixels back to life. Does anyone have that video/program?

Yup, they are stuck pixels and not dead ones. But I'm a little disappointed that a little backpack travel was all it took to damage this laptop... :(

I've got the ADP Warranty so I know I'm covered, but I want to try fixing it myself first since I love this screen so much.

Found the video...does anyone have any other advice?

The same thing happpened to me. I have a horizontal line of stuck pixel smack in the middle. I didn't do anything to my laptop. I just opened it one day and it appeared. I have the 1 year warranty that comes with the laptop. They should cover it. Just sent ur laptop back. It's a fault in assembly. I looked up on google and it cannot be fixed by those programs. It has to do with wiring and bad connection. I can't send my laptop right now becuz I'm in college and I need my laptop almost everyday, but yeah I'm thinking of sending mine this spring break.

Well, the problem still hasn't gone away despite multiple runs of all those programs. I went ahead and contacted HP for a screen replacement, and hopefully I can get it replaced by the end of next week. Well see, and I'll keep you guys updated.

Well, I got the new screen today! I was a little surprised when I turned on the computer again, because the screen is STILL an LG screen.

Anyway, the new one is perfect. Initially, the screen replacement was supposed to take about 15min, but it ended up taking about an hour because the tech wasn't entirely familiar with my model (he did read through the documentation on how to take the nc8430 apart but he never got to use that info).

However, the only problem with the service request: the replacement LCD did not have the "HP Compaq nc8430" sticker on it. It was supposed to come with it, and the tech was supposed to fix the sticker on after the screen was put on, but for some reason the sticker wasn't sent and they cannot get one to me. I would have to replace the screen again in order to get the sticker. Not worth it IMHO.

EDIT: It appears that he rubber screw covers are messed up on the new unit. It looks like those need replacement. :( I might just make them send me a new screen at this rate...I really don't appreciate when people do not look at the details on a machine that has cost me almost $3k so far.
