I own a HDX 16 1050ee laptop. I bought it 7 months ago. The laptop speakers do not work any longer. They were working fine till a week ago. if the laptop is connected to external speakers the sound is fine.

I called up HP service and followed all their suggestions to no avail. They are calling it a hardware fault caused by using a " third party sound software" i.e. VLC media player and say it is nnot covered under guarantee.

I have checked the device manager and the pc volume and both are fine. I tried updating sound codec with the one on the HP site. Windows failed to recognise the codec and even the external speakers stopped working. After a System restore the external speakers are working fine but my laptop speakers still remain silent.

The problem is that I am India for the next year or so and this laptop has not been launched out here yet. So I have to ship it back to the middle east to get it serviced.

Any ideas on what else other than a hardware problem this could be and what i should do to rectify this trouble? Please help

They should be shot for saying that VLC broke your speakers. It's most definitely a hardware issue, one of the lame ribbons they like to twist so hard has broken. I've taken apart both of my laptops and it's unbelievable how harsh of a treatment those little ribbon cables get at the factory. It's no wonder that stuff stops working after less than an year. My DV5's touchpad went dead after 4 days, luckily i had the guts to take it apart, and after i replaced the ribbon cable it has been working perfectly.

To put it simply, you're going to need a new speaker cable. In any case you'll have to take the notebook apart.
