HP Protectools Java Card - Does not include reader
    RoHS: Original

Does anybody have any idea where to get one or two of these? Has anyone used them?

Myself and another moderator were looking into those before for our business notebooks (8510p owner myself), seems like you will have to buy batches of them. :-/ (cheap) And I never got round to figuring out how we are supposed to program these things. Probably need a smart card "writer" for it.

    EDIT: Just found these...

    http://www.usasmartcard.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&keyword=&category_id=&limitstart=&mosmsg=Sorry%2C+but+the+Product+you%27ve+requested+wasn%27t+found%21

You will have to figure out which ones are compatible with your reader. If it's a reader build into your HP notebook, the support manual on the HP site should have the specifications. The question remains...how the heck do I configure these things? :p

those hp cards are discontinued as of nov 2008. unfortunately its a ridicolous fact that they are hard to find. i had to wait months just to find one of these for my notebook and stock was out after. i tried to buy one according to specs online but those didnt work out because they wanted to use their own s/w. with this hp java card...you stick it in and its ready to go. good luck and let me know if you find some because i could use hp brand java cards also.

Well I did score a few of the cards, I got them on eBay with a few of the PCMIA Readers.

Lot of 3 HP Smart Card Readers - eBay

I installed some of the packages/software from HP's site for my Laptop (which has the internal card slot) but, still can't get it to work. It's funny the machine knows that the card is install/inserted as a notice window pops-up real quick, but then goes away. The HP Security Software says that no Java Card is inserted.

I even tried the PCMIA card reader, but the same thing. I guess I will have to keep working at this.

im glad you found some smart cards! i actually found mine on the same site last year. the best way to set them up is to first insert smart card when you get to your desktop, open hp protecttools security manager, click hp protecttools, and click security manager setup. it should guide you through the process and hopefully recognize the card.

p.s. you should be able to insert the card and at least find out some details of it by going to credential manager, multifactor authentication, and properties im thinking. make sure they dont already a pin # set up on them.

If there is a PIN, is there a way to reset it? I did get to a section once that was to allow you to change the pin, but I did not get anywhere.

you can change a pin by opening hp protecttools security manager, click credential manager, click settings, click smart cards and tokens tab up top, click the + sign to the left of smart cards and highlight ricoh company, ltd. ricoh smart card reader. last click more at the bottom and you can change the pin. you'll also see properties next to the more button. when i look at properties for mine i see it says Axalto Cyberflex Access 64K (v2c). let me know if you need more help. i use Version: 4.10.10.0003 of the protecttools s/w but the video below for an older version also helped me a bit when i first set up all my security.

OK I am using the same version as you, and I followed the steps but when I try to use the More Button and the "New" wizard, it says the token is available for use. I click Next, give it a 4 digit pin, click next and I get an error that reads:

The system could not preform the requested operation. This token is not initialized. You can try to use tools provided by the card or token vendor to preform this operation.

    Any Ideas?

what do you get for when looking at properties? ex. for mine i see it says Axalto Cyberflex Access 64K (v2c). i would leave the card inserted in your smart card reader and then you need to set up security through "security manager setup" which is accessed through the "hp protecttools" module of the s/w from hp. you should come across the screen that will let you put a check in the box for java card and thats where it'll initialize the card.

ps: also check bios settings to make sure tpm, smart card reader is enabled for you to be able to use these features.

052110 EDIT: the cards you have wont work for this model laptop/protectools software. You need the blue cards pictured in first post.
