Your problem is likely a corrupted driver. You can first try uninstalling and reinstalling before going to more specified troubleshooting procedures. Go to your Device Manager, then find the driver for your optical drive:

    1. Open your Control Panel, then click on System, then Device Manager on the left side.
    2. Click on "DVD/CD ROM's".
    3. Click on your drive designation to highlight it, right click and select Uninstall.
    4. Restart your system to reinstall the driver, then check for operation.

If it doesn't work, follow the instructions below.

Go to the actual pages for your system configuration on the HP Support System at http://tinyurl.com/4bwrat

Enter your system's Product # (on the label under your system) into the field and click on the arrow. This will take you the specific pages for your system configuration. Make sure you enter your Product # and not the Model or you'll just get the Series' support page, not your individual system configuration support pages.

Enter your OS edition, then click on "Software & Driver downloads". Scroll down and update QuickPlay and any other driver you need to. See if it changes anything.

If not, go back to the HP support page for your system, then click on "Solve a Problem", then on "CD/DVD-Rom and discs". That will give you a list of various problems/solutions for your system posted by HP. Scroll down the list until you see "Troubleshooting Optical Drive Detection Problems" and click on it.

Its not clear what you mean, your dvd drive plays CD and NOT DVD, or it plays nothing?

    If it plays only CDs:

Does your laptop even HAVE quickplay? If it was refurbished it might have shipped with a bare bones operating system. (Happened to me).

Do you have any of the typical DVD playing software like QuickPlay, or Cyberlink Power DVD, or WIN DVD ?

its only plays with cds, when i put dvds in the driver, isn't working.

Well, My laptop already have quickplay in the system. Actually i don't want to play a movie but I want to install a dvd game. so it isn't a problem with Cyberlink Power DVD, or WIN DVD.....
