New member. This looks like a great site!
I was wondering if you guys could help me choose between these 2 notebooks.
He's the links to the deals that I'm looking at.

Is it worth $300 to get the 5400 RPM hard drive, 1MB L2 cache, .2 ghz, DVD burner? These seem like the big differences between the 2 machines.
With the money saved, I could upgrade the RAM in the cheaper machine.
FWIW, I will be using the machine to do Visual Studio application development and also SQL Server development in addition to normal student-type tasks. I realize that I probably need a much higher end machine, but that isn't an option. I don't want to spend more than $1,000. I really just want the best bang for the buck.
    TIA,
    shugga

Could you type the links without putting URL's on them? The "..." shows up on the link itself, so I can't get to the sites. Try splitting the link up onto different lines if necessary (I'm not sure the forum has a limit on how long a word can be). Make sure to uncheck automaticaly parse links in text!

First off $300 is with mail-in rebates, and I've never had good luck with those: be wary..

I haven't heard about the 2311 at all, but the HP L2005 seems to have a problem with hot HD's and a fan "breathing" problem (do a search for "L2000" and you'll see). Some people aren't having this problem though.

If you need the CPU speed (lots of compiling etc.) and don't mind a hyperactive fan, go with the L2005; it's going to be the best choice for a while.

Or, if you want to try both, get the Best Buy one as the mail-in rebate expires tomorrow, and see if you can live with it's performance. As to spending $300 on RAM... unless you're going to max out your RAM (and even then, you'll have money left over), which isn't necessary--1 GB is well enough--I'd rather spend the $300 on a better HD and RAM or possibly a replacement CPU (if you know how to and if you don't mind breaking your warranty).
