Have a 513N as an extra desktop but don't use much. Want to redo it, but I can't find HP Tools on it to do built in recovery (maybe HP didn't have that 6 years ago?). If it came with cd's, have no idea where they'd be.

I have an hp latptop, dv8305us, I got 2 years ago for business/personal that has been awesome. Obviously it has built in HP Recovery. I never burned the dvds since it has it built in. I have an external Toshiba hard drive as well (the new portable units they just came out with).

Can I move XP from the latop to the desktop somehow? Or copy certain files to the external that will allow me to restore the desktop to when it was brand new? Or can I burn the dvds and use them on the desktop?

No, the recovery discs for the laptop will only work for the laptop. You will need an oem Microsoft OS disc of the correct version to reinstall on the desktop. Just use the product key from the sticker on your tower.............
