Just received delivery of a brand new HP 530 with Optiarc DVD writer.

The 'problem' I'm having is the DVD writer seems to sometimes make 'crunching' noises and similar when reading or spinning down media, however it does read media fine. Both originals and backups.

Have I got a duff drive? And will HP replace the entire laptop with a new one if so rather than a repair?

It's always hard to tell about noise...
    Is it your first laptop?

No about my 7th (I'm just setting it up for a friend)

Anyway as it happens I have the laptop resting on the box. Moved it slightly and the noise is now fine!

    Weird...
