guys i just spoke with 3 places that carry this , its A CTO meaning that its ordered a certain way by the place you call and they order it that way from hp kinda like when you go to office depot or staples and setup a custom configuration.. we cant buy these this way.. they are still hp built and still inder the three year warranty but they are in fact sold complete

A little info before you all go on to configure these units.

I have done this before as my previous two HP notebooks have been configured this way. However, you cannot purchase the base units as we call them. They must be purchased as a complete set which includes HP branded CPU, RAM, HDD, etc. or else the units cannot be built and shipped to you. Adding all these components end up to a much higher final price.

Depending on your configuration, the CTO builds may end up being cheaper or more expensive than preconfigured models. The only reason to go the CTO route is when there's a specific combination of specs you need, i.e. T7800 on 8510w with WSXGA screen which is not available as a preconfigured unit.

Some CTO builds only have 1 year warranty standard, while others have a 3/3/0 regional APJ (Asia Pacific/Japan) warranty (not international). CTO builds are built direct from HP's factory either in Singapore or China. All preconfigured units are from China.

HP doesn't have an end user configuration tool like they do in the US, so you will have to configure this with a reseller or distributor like Ingram Micro. In fact distributors will not even bother to work out the components for you, so you will need to work out the configuration before placing the order.

The RQ555AV only has 1 year pick up and return warranty.

Now that the secret's out, I hope HP doesn't kill this option anytime soon.

So has anyone bought from www.computers4sure.com? I *just* placed an order for an 8510P and stumbled on this thread.

Will they build the laptop for me or do I have to buy all the pieces together and assemble it myself?

    Thanks

you are talking about australia units in specific right? Ingram micro is a distributor in australia. Yeh, most of the shops marked the units with a one year warranty.

but they are so much cheaper than pre configs.

Chrixxx: do you have any more specific info on the RQ555AV? Is everything else about it the same as the normal 8510p? HDMI, BT, 8 Cell Battery etc?

Im a bit worried because the quoted shipping weight is about 1 kilo less than the normal 8510p. HAHA

RQ555AV3 is just a generic number for the 8510P chassis i believe.

but you have a good deal there. 3 year international is pretty amazing, plus you get the 7200RPM drive and 2gb ram.

Hp don't do student deals in australia

RQ555AV is the product number for 8510P base units. All CTO models should have this product number.

It has everything the 8510p has as standard, including the same graphics card. Only processor, RAM, HDD, screen, OS, fingerprint reader, wireless options, bluetooth, optical drive and warranty are configurable.

Fo rthose of you concerned about a short warranty ou should know that HP offers a variety of extended warranty packages. Nothing that I know of would prevent you from purchasing an extended warranty with any new HP product. I would contact HP sales to make sure of the time frame you have to purchase any extended warranty. Some warranties used to have a 30day window for purchase from time of receipt of a new machine.

Has anybody bought one yet? Can you give a quick review if you do?

In Australia, the model is 04681953. My main concern is the screen resolution. I need a higher resolution screen.
Some websites say WSXGA, and some say WSXGA+. They are not in the normal stores and the websites offer limited services with no refund.
    Thanks.

Thank you guys for the info.
Finally I got the HP 8510p from www.betterit.com.au

I think it's a very good deal. I am waiting to replace the 5400 rpm hard disk with a 7200 rpm hard disk and hence I haven't been using it much.
My initial impression is very good and there's no dead pixels.

I chose the Vista 64-bit installation and it does seem a bit slow.
