I just received my 8510P, it's built very well, looks and runs great.

But the heat of the palmrest and touchpad area is a bit bothersome.

The temps look fine, but who am I to believe the screen, or my hands?

I could not imagine resting this on my lap, the heat at the bottom is quite hot.

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced similar heat from this laptop.

Perhaps there is a fan issue I need to take care of...

I have a similar temperature reading on mine. The bottom is a little hot and I can see it being uncomfortable on one's lap. The main heat spot on mine is underneath the trackpad. Still, this laptop doesn't run nearly as hot as others, but it's not cool either.

Have you done any fan tweaking?

Sigh, looks like I have gotten away with purchasing a cooler for too long ...

The touchpad is almost "too hot". If I didn't have a mouse or trackball this would be a problem.

Yeah same with mine, the wireless card does tend to get alittle warm. Is you 8510p new? Have you updated the bios? Lets hope it's not still on the original one...

If it is used, check the vents for dust.

I had the same hdd as you did, (now switched to 5k500.b), you hdd temps looks warm, whats your room temp? Mine never got up to that temp unless I am using it out side on a warm day.

It's new and I have not updated the bios yet , will do that

room temp is about 24 degrees Celsius,

I'm thinking the HDD is getting up there, 42C (107F) to 49C (120F) in no time at all while simply running firefox on a flat surface indoors:

The 8510p usually keeps the GPU to around 30 C. I've seen it go to 35ish when I played the Crysis demo and DMC4.

ARom: Your HDD is running a little hot. It shouldn't reach 49 C from FF. Right now, I've been running FF and my computer in general for a few hours, plus my room temp is close to 80, and my HDD is at 38 C.

You CPU temp seems abit high too. My room temp is about 22C right now, I am on my cooler @ 1000rpm. (lowest setting)

    HDD - 29C
    CPU - 29.4C

    :D

Alright, well should I invest in a new HDD or a cooler?

Must be an other reason why everything is running warmer than it should be. The 8510p shouldnt need a cooler but I just have one anyway. :p Which CPU did you get? Tried undervolting?

    It's the T9300 (2.50, 6mb cache).

    I have not tried undervolting.

I was planning on selling this to a friend so I don't want to tweak it too much (undervolting).

If I can't stand the heat I doubt he will, so I'm trying to get this under control.

everything seems to be fine after doing the bios update and leaving it off. granted it hasn't been on for 6+ hrs...

could the bios update have solved the problem or is that wishful thinking on my part?

The early bios versions had GPU clock issues and fan control issues. How are you temps now? HP notebooks like their wifi cards under the touchpad, which is annoying.

are there any touchpad coolers? :p That would be nice if it could keep the speed and traction.

The temps are back where they were.

I'm guessing the HDD is the culprit for the overall heat of the machine, no? I think a max 49 while idle is a problem.

49 doesn't sound too hot to me. over 55 would be getting hot. 60 would be trouble.

How hot does it get when you duplicate let's say a 5GB folder?
    How is your ambient temp?

Room. My room is 25 C, my Samsung 5400rpm is 47 C idling. If I lift my laptop a little it becomes cooler because I lost the feet of my laptop.

My room is about 25 C as well, the Toshiba is 47 C after 5GB duplication, 40 C idle.

So I think it's HP's wireless card under the touchpad that is the issue, and my fingers are just too sensitive...

My room temp right now is 28C and my 8510p have been sitting on my lap for over 45mins. My 5k500.b is sitting at 38C. I genuinely have not seen my old and identical toshiba hdd around 45C+ much in my 8510p. Thats why I am alittle puzzled.

I don't like my hdds near 50C. It's just me though. Undervolting can definitely drop the CPU temp abit. The CPU/GPU cooling on the 8510p is really quite good.

Is your wifi card the 4695 AGN by the way...?

If you happen to be running N mode, that uses an extra 0.5w - 1.0w according to the intel specifications.

how do I switch the mode on this notebook?

and how about the powerplan options? I'm in high performance plugged... would "HP optimized" or "powersaver" help? I know my last Asus undervolted the cpu and such when changing power options.

All in all though, I think my fingers have adjusted to the touchpad heat. But my last m50vm spoiled me, it ran so cool all of the time... the touchpad was icecold on that one :D

    Alright, thanks people.

How about that slim hp bluetooth PC card mouse, have you tried on of these? It came in the box although they didn't even mention it in checkout
