    hello all

My work has purchased an HP 8510W with 4GB RAM for me and they have also bought a Hitachi Travelstar 7k200 200GB 7200rpm to replace the stock 120GB that comes as standard.

However they cannot get the laptop to see the HDD. Is there a basic compatibility issue here or should it just work or is there a trick they are missing that is required to get it to work?

any experience of the above combination welcomed

    thanks

It should work. Maybe they didn't connect it right (loose connector).

well I am going to have a go - they are going to give me the laptop and the HDD for me to try to get working myself. I am looking for someone who has done this themselves already (successfully) to just get confirmation that I am not trying to do something that is impossible.

    thanks

There shouldn't be a problem swapping out 1 SATA HDD for another. Check what the SATA settings are in BIOS, check to make sure that the connections aren't loose, check to make sure the new HDD is even spinning up, and make sure the BIOS is up-to-date.

Also, what OS are you trying to install? Remember, you need to slipstream SATA drivers into the OS install disk for it to be able to view SATA HDD's. If you are using the Recovery Disks though, it will have the SATA drivers inside of it. Check out this thread here, it isn't the same laptop, but it will give you more information on the SATA drivers and slipstreaming them into an OS install disk:

I have the EXACT same problem with the EXACT same setup. Did you find any solution?
