I never was an ATI fan. I decided to give them a try with the 8510p. The performance was okay. The driver support is horrid, even for Windows. The HD2600 was just not going to cut it. So, after researching a bit, I found out that the 8510p and 8510w are basically the same. They use the same bios, but the NVIDIA card was only included with the 8510w, which prices were a lot higher than the 8510p at the time. Well, more research lead to the NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M (aka the G84GLM). I tried getting a few requests from some local companies, but no luck. A search on eBay for NVIDIA G84GLM brought up the following:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130222678907&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=003
Sure, the price tag of 200 dollars is a bit high, but I was tired of the ATI, so I went with it.
The card arrived today, excellent packing by the seller I might add. I pulled the ATI card out and dropped the NVIDIA one right into it's spot. I was expecting at worst no screen at all during boot, but nope. The BIOS comes up with a Quadro logo.![]()
I am now installing drivers, but this definitely looks like a viable option for anyone with a 8510p, especially when the cards become cheaper.
While I was in there, I cleaned up a bit of the over-applied thermal grease and plan to open her back up and put some arctic silver on the CPU and GPU later. I also found a nice square of lint in there too.![]()
I'll keep you guys updated if anything happens, but so far, so good.

Your lucky to have a machine that supported swapping graphics cards. Personally I liked the ATI on my old HP ze4281 better than the NVIDIA cards in my current machines, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
Best of luck.

Alright, I just found out that the card is a FX 570M instead of the 1600M. My bad.
Either way, it works perfectly. -
SWEET!!!
I thought that might be the case. I got my mom one with the Gf 7600/7800 in it, right before they discontinued. I've been wanting to crack it open and install a good CAD card in it.
Now I'm gonna hafta!

That's great to hear, I've been looking into swapping cards for my nx9420 (previous gen 8710p) from the ATI X1600 to a nVIDIA FX1500M. I don't plan on getting a new notebook soon so this should be suitable for now. Only problem is I might need to change the heatsink. Enjoy your new card.
-
You should be able to reuse the heatsink, unless the physical chip is bigger and the surface area might not be enough.
On another note, I did this swap to get video support in OSX. Yes, I have a dual boot WinXP/OSX setup. Video works great now, enough to edit HD video. All I need to do is wait for the Intel 4965 drivers, or find a USB wireless adapter somewhere that has support. But yah, overall, the swap was definitely worth it. -
Well the amount of heat for the nVIDIA card produces more heat and they have a specific heatsink for it so if it's cheap then it wouldn't hurt purchasing it. Just wondering if anyone would think if 8710p or 8710w cards would work since it would be great to have DX10 and a newer card. I suppose it's hard for you to answer that but maybe someone will have some further insight.

@ robstah,
i´m curious , if you could do any benching with the card. especially the opengl benchmark specviewperf10 comes to my mind when i am writing this. this is the industries number one comparison for opengl capabilities of a graphics card. it will also show if your system is stable or not. if this benchmark crashes, you will be sure there is a problem with your machine. -
anyone know what model this card is ?
