I was curious if anyone knew if it was possible to get digital audio out from the HP 8510p? I've done a lot of searching on this topic, and tried several things myself, and have had no luck.

I have tried both optical and coaxial out from the headphone port. The sound control panel tells me I have spdif out, but says nothing about which port to use (it also says it's available via HDMI, but I'm not interested in going that method). Users with laptops from other manufacturers seem to just plug in a mini toslink to their headphone port, turn on spdif, and everything works. I have tried just that, but still no signals comes from the port.

If anyone has gotten this to work, please let me know what I'm missing. I have a feeling it might be driver related (I formatted the notebook as soon as I got it) so I may be missing some drivers.

In my sound control panel, I have three audio out options (HDMI, Speakers, and Digital Output Device), all of them "working". What am I doing wrong?

Also, when I get info on the Direct Output Device, under "Jack Information" it says "No Information Available". And I'm running Vista32.

I think the SPDIF option is available with the driver but not with the audio card itself. My SoundMax driver started showing SPDIF when I installed a newer version and I know for sure that my machine does not support it (Evo N1000C). I guess that is the way sound card drivers are released - one driver for all models.

I am not sure about this but even if you manage to convert your analog audio to digital, the sound quality would be the same right?

You could get a Creative X-Fi express card. It would get you great sound quality and you could connect some really good speakers to its SPDIF port. NBR had an article on it sometime back.

Only way is to go with HDMI. And you can't use Creative X-Fi express card on 8510p because it has only PCMCIA. You can buy docking station and Creative X-Fi express card then there is a way since docking station has express card slot

Alright, well my receiver has both optical and coaxial in (no HDMI). Whats my best option to get a digital audio feed from my 8510p? I don't need multichannel audio, I just hate the way the analog audio sounds. Is there an HDMI to coaxial/optical converter?
