I assume that the 8510p must have a modular GPU, as it can either be ordered with Quadro FX or a Radeon. Has anyone opened it up and tried to remove the GPU?

If it is indeed modular, and perhaps based on some kind of reverse MXM or something, then is there a possibility it could be swapped out for a better card in the future? Or could I even swap out the 2600 for the Quadro FX?

Nope, you can't upgrade it. Just because you could remove it (which i don't know), you can't swap it. The video Bios is in the motherboard bios, so the mobo needs to support the GPU. And the Quadro FX is only available with 8510w.

It is? Woow. But wasn't HP one of those that looks like MXM, but isn't?

    *sigh*

Difficult question. The formfactor is OK, but I tested a HP card that didn't boot. Why not is a mystery. There's no way of telling what will work and what not.

Example: I did a lot of testing with Quanta/Gateway MXM cards. None of those were succesfull (installing a few quanta cards in my notebook, sending out several types of cards to Gateway owners etc etc.. None of it worked. Then I got another request and I send the guy 3 (THREE) cards and what do you know: one actually works.

So maybe the HP will not accept 90% of the cards out there but we might get a lucky break. Maybe it will never work with any other card. Who knows?

What cards did you send? And it was a 8510p, right?

Not to HP. I was talking about a Gateway 8550 that was upgraded from a x700 to a x1900.

which Quadro FX are you looking at. the only one faster is the FX 1600 and that would cost a **** load more. most likely produce more heat and drain more bat as well.

just overclock the HD2600 lightly and it should be on par with the Fx 1600. And dont buy into the bull**** that you need a quadro card to run CAD software. Autocad and 3ds Max are DX9 based now.

Very interesting. If it is MXM Type II in form, then maybe I can order a 8600GT GDDR3 in order to test it out if I purchase the 8510p...hmm...

the motherboard bios contains ALL video bioses and loads the appropriate one... so upgrading to firegl v5600 (a radeon) or the quadro 570m IS possible.
