If you look at the link
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/e...owerful&psn=notebooks_tablet_pcs/notebook_pcs
it says that you can install max 4GB in a 8710p but in 8710w you can add 8GB.
Now these two machines are basically identical. It's the same chipset and BIOS so how come they differ when it comes to the amount of RAM you can add?
-
Saw that too. I don't know but I reckon it might be a typo.
Says the same thing about 8710p here, under At a Glance:

Can you buy 4GB sticks now?
Maybe you'll be able to soon, and it's not a typo?
It does say it again here:

Erm, you can even configure the "w" versions with 8GB RAM for like $1,400...
Also, HP site should not be taken as gospel (whatever that means), as it's proven that it's not.
Both of them are listed up to 8GB in the detailed specs:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12716_na/12716_na.HTML
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12731_na/12731_na.HTML -
they BOTH support 8GB of ram... HP gives the option to configure it only on the W since it is considered expensive
.
8X10p/w line does in fact support 8GB of ram... the only catch being that they have to be double the density... same number of chips.... NOT double the number of chips and same density per chip.
In short... you'll have to wait for the price to drop and pay attention when you buy. -
Cool. Can you by 4GB sticks now?
What OS can use 8GB? Vista 64 only?
HP 8710p 4GB but 8710w 8GB
