Check back again in a few weeks.
-
lol...nice. Don't feel bad Dragon. I am the same way. I was told a September release of the Elitebook I ordered and now it looks like early October at the soonest.
BBGus -
Preconfigured models (SmartBuys) are now available on the HP website, but configure-to-order doesn't seem to be and option yet. Ship dates for the preconfigured models are 9/3/08.

Yey...so expensive...hopefully I'll get the chance to buy one until October
.
-
Man I hate how companies cant communicate internally.
Now to go check it out. -
How can I learn about the different processors. And if its a quad core, will it SAY quad core? the reason I ask is this:
from the HP site:
Processors available
Learn more about HP notebooks and Intel Centrino vPro technology
Latest Intel quad-core mobile processors
Intel® Core 2 Extreme Processor X9100 (3.06 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T9600 (2.80 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB)
does this imply that they are ALL quad core, or that its just saying "latest intel quad core" and its not giving the details on those, and by the way, here are the details on the NON quad core processors you can get?? -
I think the quad-core CPU's aren't available yet (from HP), so it's just giving details on the Duo-Core processors.
One give-away on the quad-core is that it should have a 12MB L2 cache. I think it will also have a Q before the model number. Here's an example from the Lenovo W700:
Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme processor QX9300 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 12MBL2) -
It will be quad core compatible once the new CPU will be released. The 8710W handled a much more hungry inside than the 8730W will have to (hopefully).
-
Unfortunately the Quadro 3700 graphic chip is not offered on any of the pre configured models
-
Wait for it, HP will offer it (maybe on CTO only, who knows).
-
troubles with G92??

The prices for the version with the 3700 are being released now, and indeed they are not cheap, we are around $5000 and over :
http://www.onsale.com/shop/detail.a...e&source=BWBGoogleBase&wt.mc_id=BWBGoogleBase -
-
So Im used to laptop companies that only sell through them - Dell, Alienware.
Why is it that shop has a configuration that isnt even possible on the HP site (meaning the Dreamcolor display and the expensive GPA)? -
Good question, but I suppose HP released some pricelist in advance to allow the resellers to make their calculations and decide their price for the notebook. Just my guess however.
I also found this from the HP canadian website :
http://www.hp.com/canada/utilities/pricing_lookup/data/list_price.xls
The code for the 8730w with 3700M is KS074UT and it costs 5549 CAD, so we are not far from the other website.
I'm not too much surprised considering it is their top-of-the-line business notebook and brand new, still I wonder if the extra-price over the old 8710w is really worth the extra cost. -
Is there a known date when you guys will get this laptop to review it?!
-
I just got my 8730w today and I like it. Haven't done any benchmarks (which programs do you recomend) but first impressions about build quality is very good. It's also to soon to talk about battery life but it's somewhere around 3h and 30min.
-
N -
Will do so tomorrow when I download it.
-
yigy, nice picture. Alfa Romeo make great cars. One of my favorite too.
Anyway, can you post a mini-review of this notebook? First impressions/thoughts? Screen quality? A few pictures always help.
Thanks. -
@yigy, could you describe noise levels when idle and 100% cpu/gpu usage??
-
A mini-review would be nice if you get the time to write it.
Regarding build quality: does the screen lid flex? Can you see effects on the screen if you press on the back of the lid?
Display quality and benchmarks of the 2700M would be interesting too.
Thanks,
Dragos -
Screen quality looks good to me and WSXGA resolution is good enough for me (I was afraid that I made a mistake becouse 8710w that I previously ordered had WUXGA).Viewing angles are good and contrast is great. Didn't tried it outdoors yet but will do later today.
Can't tell you about heat 'couse I didn't run any heavy application/games for more than 15min.
I tried Crysis Warhead a bit on 1280x800 on gamer and it didn't run fluid. But I run it on DX10 so today I'll try on DX9.
I'll post benchmarks and pictures in approximately one hour. -
Here are the pics...
and the benchmarks are around 4500 3dMarks06 with HP drivers on Vista and on 1280x1024 (***?!). I'll try with 1.7813 from laptop2go.com later. -
How are the trackpad buttons? In the review of the 8530w the reviewer complained about those as not being sensitive enough. Do you have problems getting your clicks registered?
Since the 8530w with the 770M got 5230 3D marks (supposedly out of the box with HP drivers), I suppose there's something strange with the drivers on your machine.
Dragos -
Well I installed the latest drivers (1.7813) and I still get 4713 3DMarks 06! What's wrong?!
At CPU tests I get 2 FPS at best!?! -
Look into the nvidia control panel to see if maybe the GPU is overheating?
Or maybe you can try an OpenGL 3D app to see the performance?
Dragos -
-
You can also try the SPECviewperf benchmarks which actually made for professional OpenGL graphic cards (like the Quadro in the 8730w):
http://www.spec.org/benchmarks.html#gwpg
The results for the previous model, 8710w are here:

Thanks for the tip! -
Regarding my question few posts before: do you see any problems with the touchpad's buttons?
Dragos -
Oh sorry I thought I answered your question before...no I don't see any problems with touchpad's buttons. They're very responsive.

By the way, did you get the Dream Color display? How's the screen quality?
-
No unfortunately DreamColor display wasn't avaliable when I ordered it (even if it was it's a very expensive option so I wouldn't opt for it). But for now I'm more than satisfied with my screen. Good resolution and contrast. Viewing angles are also excelent.

How much do you guys think the 8730w will cost with these configurations?:
CPU: T9400 2.53Ghz.
GPU: ATI Mobitilty FireGL V5725 256MB
Display: 17" (WSXGA+) Dream Color
RAM: 4GB DDR2
Hard Drive: 320GB 7200RPM
Other: DVD optical drive
I'm still waiting for HP to add a "Configure" option on their website... -
The option is there:
http://h71016.www7.hp.com/ctoBases.asp?oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=S_ADMIN&ProductLineId=539&FamilyId=2860&LowBaseId=27010&LowPrice=$1,298.00&familyviewgroup=1678&viewtype=Matrix&jumpid=re_R2515_store/smProdCat/PSG/notebooks/HP_8730w_notebook_CFG9
but it's of no use as the DreamColor option is not available. -
-
Elite Cataphract Notebook Evangelist
Does anyone know when the Dream Color display will become available? -
yigy, any follow up after some time of usage? Are you satisfied with the system? Any problems/dislikes?
Dragos -
have you tried hooking the laptop up to an external monitor? i remember someone who had a 8710w complaining that this caused the laptop's fans to kick into high gear, even at idle... wondering if the 8730w has the same problem (hopefully not!)
-
-
Dragos -
Hi, yigy. It is interesting to know who is manufacturer of your 8730w screen (can you check it in Everest)? And also what about light leakage and graininess?
-
The screen of my 8730w is an LG.
-
Steffen, could you check your LG screen particular Model and Monitor ID in Everest? I'm interested in comparison of 8710w and 8730w screens. I know that WSXGA+ screens of 8710w are LG Philips LP171W02.
-
It's an LPL4101.
