I downloaded the newest driver for the nvidia 8600..Which is like a year old now..Sometimes I would get the old blue screen crash and dump when viewing certain dvds..So I checked nvidia's website and got this driver and now I can't even watch dvds in the windows media player 11..I like to use it and other players work like the built in Quickplay..

I thought it was the codec but I am not sure what to do..I have tried a couple things installing codec packages and what nOT..Downloaded the new Divx 7 package and it gave me back avi and some files will now play..But some are s till a green blank...Also the dvd playback won't even do that or play sound..It kinda starts and everything freezes and its just black..The WMP locks up and becomes un responsive...Have shut it down and start over..I was thinking of going back to the old nvidia driver that I had but now sure how to do this.. Any suggestions of what to try?

Uninstall all codecs and get K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It's the only pack that actually works properly. If i remember right K-Lite can do the uninstalling for you, but it doesn't hurt to do it yourself.

It should work without trouble afterwards. If you like WMP that's fine, but do check out Media Player Classic which is bundled with K-Lite.

Man thanks for the help..I downloaded the pack and installed it..It plays everything with the classic player but when set it back to use the Media Player 11 it is the samething...

Funny thing is I have several video clips on my laptop and the media player will play the mpeg and avi clips fine..And it will play some WMV files fine..But other WMV clips it doesn't play..You get the sound but just a green square in place of the video..

When I try to play dvds with it now the WMP recongnizes the dvd but when you play it the thing just stop responding and freezes..Usually have to shut the player down and re-open it to use it again..

I also downloaded the 64 bit version codec pack but haven't installed it yet..Don't see that it would really help? Also noticed when the pack installed it said it was enabling the internal mpeg2 decoder...

This sucks....And I have read quite a bit about problems with this pacticular model of hp laptop and the nvidia 8600 card...Seems there was compatibility issues with both sides blaming each other..I sometimes would get the fail screen and the driver would fail..Thats why I checked their web page for a new driver..

Windows Media Player is still a 32-bit app so the 64-bit codecs won't help it. Honestly i've gotten so used to Media Player Classic that i don't care really. The only time i still use WMP is for a quick preview of songs, since in mini mode it loads faster than Winamp or Foobar2000.

If you get driver BSODs then your graphics card is on its way out. You need to send the motherboard for reflow (it's $30 if i remember right), or you can go the ghetto route and do it yourself (hot air gun or oven :p).

Well I figured out part of it..I used the WMV9 Power Toy and disabled DXVA hardware accerelation for WMV files....It now plays all of my files correctly again..But still won't play the DVD...So I think if I revert back to the old driver it will play again..How the best way just remove the nvidia driver in the add/remove programs list?

Before when it would fail it would only do that just every once in awhile..

Yeah just remove it and install the old one again. There are some paranoid people that use Driver Cleaner and stuff like that, but i've never had a single issue with different video drivers, even when changing video cards (on a desktop computer) from nVidia to ATi or the other way around.

Well dude here it is..I downloaded the above an uninstalled the other one..I ran the new one 196.21...It said some crap about compatibilty issue with hardware and didn't install..But after everything un installed and the system re-booted with the old driver re installed...And its dated december of 2008...Everything works again..The dvds are playing WMP 11..So after downloaded and installing all of that codecs and packages this was the problem.....

Now I may download the above link and see if that driver works..Because this old one does give the BSOD on occasion..Sometimes it recovers on its own and sometimes not..

    Product Current
    Installed Driver Latest Driver
    Update
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS 177.13 GeForce Release 179 for Notebooks
    Version: 179.48
    Release Date: February 11, 2009

Thats why I downloaded it the auto feature on nvidia's website shows this as the latest driver and the one I currently have as 177.13 which is correct.

I am downloading 195.62 and will try it..The newest version 196.21 would never install for me it kept saying it couldn't find any hardware that was compatible with the driver?

Drivers from nvidia.com will NOT work on a notebook because nVidia does not provide the necessary INF files, they leave it up to the notebook manufacturers to provide drivers. It's part of some agreement.

www.laptopvideo2go.com - this is where you should get all your mobile drivers. Just take my word for it and install that customized 185.85 and be happy.

Well I got that last one to work....I downloaded the notebook version and it is working..Now I might upgrade it tomorrow to the latest version..You have to be careful or you will get the desktop version if you don't look closely...

I was looking at that custom one on the site and it said you had to delete all the nividia stuff before you installed the 185.85 customized? Some were having problems...

I uninstalled the nVidia drivers via add/remove and rebooted. The standard VGA was installed upon reboot. Then i installed Dox's drivers and that was all. I also experimented with other official nvidia drivers and had no problems re-installing Dox's release with the same method.
