    Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you knew the specifics of the APP discount. I recently graduate from college, and I'll be going back to graduate school in a few months. Can I still use the APP discount? I can log in, but how much can they check on my status? Anyone know?

    Thanks!

It just requires you to put in some information about where you go to school. I don't know if HP really checks or not, but you should still be able to get the APP discount. When I used it, I got about $75, so it's decent but nothing amazing...

Nonetheless, any discount is still welcome. :p

I just purchased a dv2000t for my daugher who's attending college, and used the APP discount. All I had to do was input her school, and got the discount. I had to agree to allow HP to verify her information, but they didn't contact us to prove she is enrolled. I guess they could have contacted the university, but I have no idea if me agreeing to allow HP to verify her information would be good enough for the school to give out that information.

Well, I believe the Education Privacy Act (or whatever that act they cite) only allows school to give out private information with consent from parent and student. Although I'm not exactly sure if enrollment verification would count under private info...

I received about $100 off of my recent dv9000t purchase using the APP discount. There is no indication that HP tries to verify elegibility.

Probably a stupid question, but I'll put it out there anyways. Is there any way to apply the APP discount when you buy a customized HP from Costco?

Or does anyone know if you can get a larger discount from Costco if you order via phone or in-store?

I was offered a $100 additional discount when I called to order a Sony VAiO FE890 CTO versus the on-line price for the same configuration. I should probably just call Costco and find out...but if anyone has done this, please let me know what you've found. I want to get the most bang for my buck!

Even if you're not a Costco member, anyone ordering an HP/Compaq (others too) should consider ordering from Costco. They're customizable and just look at the return policy, it's easily worth a $50 membership fee. Why would you not order from Costco? Thanks, peace.

The APP discount is only available from HP. Costco is discounted already (I think at least) and you cannot combine multiple deals.

They're customizable and just look at the return policy, it's easily worth a $50 membership fee. Why would you not order from Costco?

Last I checked their six-month policy is slowly shrinking, and I think other return policies are starting to disappear as well. It might still be worth it, but I wanted to at least point it out.

As of today, 3/25/2007, HP.com prices are lower (with the APP discount from HP) than Costco.com. Same configuration of dv9000t: Costco.com = $1,903 (includes $50 membership) and HP.com = $1,800 (both exclude taxes, and all values are rounded to the nearest dollar).

    dv9000t base system prices: Costco = $1,101; HP = $1,025.

    CTO Specifications for dv9000t :
    – 35% OFF! Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
    – Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
    – 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
    – 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
    – HP Imprint Finish + Microphone + Webcam
    – 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    – 200GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (100GB x 2)
    – Super Multi 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
    – Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
    – No TV Tuner w/remote control
    – High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I'm an avid price-checkerer...er. Other models/configurations may vary in price differences, but I think HP.com with the APP discount is generally going to be cheaper, but definitely compare similar configurations at both stores.

    Costco's Return Policy (3/25/2007): (PDF)
    http://www.costco.com/Images/Content/Misc/PDF/concierge.PDF

Basically, returns allowed within 90 days from date of purchase to any Costco warehouse (store) and they extend the Manufacturer's warranty to 2 years at no additional cost.

    HP's Return Policy (3/25/2007):
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/return_exchange.do

Basically, returns/exchanges up to 21 days after delivery, and you have to expressly follow their protocol, which means you'll have to get an RA# and ship it back to HP, then wait and wait... and wait.

About 4 days ago, when I made my first post on this topic, it was actually cheaper to buy from Costco, but now the prices have been adjusted such that Costco is more expensive than when using the APP discount at HP. So I guess it's a preference: do you value the lower price of HP.com or the convenience of Costco's return process and extended warranty? Just make sure to check updated policies before making a decision.

Does anybody know if either Costco or HP offer additional discounts when ordering via telephone or in-store?
