I have an old C700 compaq notebook which I had tons of trouble with from the start. To make up for all the troubles I was given a "HP 4Y ADP PICKUP RTN NB SVC" from my HP case manager. Tonight it slipped out of its bag and hit the last few cement steps at my friends apartment. Its coming apart at the cracks and won't turn on(shocking..). Looking at the ADP fine print, under " Accidental damage protection does not provide coverage for" it lists Alteration or modification of the Product in any way.

This last year I have upgraded the HDD, Optical drive(Old one died and by then it was out of warranty) and the Ram I upgraded years ago. Is it saying my ADP is void because I replaced these things? Or is it saying I can't use ADP to Get these things done?

    Thanks for the help!

As far as I know, the ADP warranty will not cover fire or theft. The Optical drive, memory and hard drive are considered "consumer replaceable" components and are permitted to be changed by the end-consumer. As long as you didn't open the entire laptop to gain access, you should be fine. Using the little access panels on the bottom is permitted.

I've had to contact HP in the past about a similar issue.

They might fix it, but you may have to put in the components that came with it to get it repaired

Always put the original components back in the laptop when sending it in to be serviced. The technician may replace your parts with factory components and they will be gone forever.

If you lack the original components, then just send it in without your personal additions. They should be able to utilize a temporary drive for the duration of the repair.

Who knows with ADP. If it's an older model that seems to have been severely damaged, they may send you a new notebook as a replacement.

Let us know how it goes...

Well this is getting more complicated then it needs to be. I was able to find all the old hardware accept for the optical drive. I was looking at my "order status" on the HP website and it says they received my notebook and its "PROBABLY BEYOND ECONOMIC REPAIR " with a service charge of $998.00". I called HP and was given a case manager since I have ADP and I guess thats how ADP works.

The case manager started going through the process of getting me a replacement. 10 minutes of dead-silence later, he asks me for the Order # I got when buying the notebook from HP. I went though every HP email I have ever received and for some reason I don't have one. All I have is a fedex email with the tracking number and shipping info(But it doesn't contain an Order Number) and an order confirmation email for the ADP(The email lists the serial and model of my notebook too). He confirms I have ADP for the notebook and it should be totally covered - but unless I can find the order number for when I purchased the notebook he is "Unable to tell if I have replaced the notebook in the past through ADP" and "build me a replacement of equal or better specs". He put in a request with some department to track down the order number but that can take days. Its crazy to me. They have the computer, all its records(Manufacturing date, Repairs), all my information and now I have to wait as they search for some number to confirm everything on their screen is true? Ugh...

That sounds like something out of Kafka.

We recently had a good experience with the ADP coverage on a refurb my wife bought. She spilled a very tiny bit of tea on the touchpad and the laptop was suddenly toast. We called Tech Support and the in-home tech arrived at our house in less than 24 hours, took it apart, said the mobo needed to be replaced and helped us ship it out - this was on a Tuesday. Surprisingly, on Friday we received a package from FedEx and it was the laptop with replaced motherboard.

I can't recall if we were asked for the order number. it's something that starts with H111...you might want to do a search in your inbox for the words "Your HP Order" with quotes - they send emails with subject heading "Your HP Order Has Shipped" "Your HP Order Confirmation" etc.

Well Thankfully the department my case manager contacted was able to get my order number. And I couldn't be more pleased! I figured I would end up with a ready-to-ship $400 compaq - Which would have been fair.

But to my surprise my CM called me this morning to inform me he has arranged for my ancient C700 to be replaced with a HP Pavilion dv6-3150us. Then a couple hours ago I got a call before he left office informing me everything was done and its being processed for shipment.
