I have a DV1000 series laptop that I purchased a year and a half ago. The backlight died at christmas and I just got around to calling HP today on the issue.

I was told once on the phone and again by someone else in an email today that they do not replace just the backlight but the whole screen. Since I'm 6 months out of warranty that would be on my dime or course, and the price:

"I am sorry to say that the entire LCD has to be replaced and the
cost is $698 (excl. taxes). "

Has anyone had their backlight replaced? I consider myself to have the ability to replace it myself if the chance arose. Has anyone dealt with a good source for the parts?

    Thanks
    -JC

$698 is a ludicrous price. I bet they replace the whole upper assembly to save time. I agree with info that ebay is probably your best bet.

Here's a quick link to some ebay auctions. Use good judgment when buying!

Thanks for the link. I think I am going to try determining if it is the inverter or the backlight tubes that are not working and then order the appropriate part. I came across this website and hopefully they will have the parts that I need. Looks like I'll be prying all those bastard plastics clips that hold the computer together apart again soon.

Oh the $698 is in Canadian funds, not that it makes it much better....

it's a very easy deal to replace the CCFL tube. Here is a nice resource for info and parts:

    http://lcdrepair.net/lcd-repair.htm

be warned they have video's that start with each page...that part is always annoying at best but it's solid info.

BTW, I would always order two or more lights since you could potentially break or damage one during the install.
