I talked to the guy who repaired my laptop about what brands he thought lasted the longest and needed the least repairs (he's been fixing computers all his life pretty much). And he said hp/compaq were the best. I was just wondering if anyone here also thinks so or if they have another opinion and why.

He must be on crack. Out of all the major retail laptop brands I've worked on, HP consumer line laptops comes in for service the most. This is excluding any at fault failures such as liquid damage and droppage. Most failures comes down to the motherboard, Intel and Nvidia chipsets includes. I normally don't encounter HP's business line laptops.
Another brand I normally don't get is Dell, oddly enough I get more Macbooks then Dells. Sony laptops I rarely see. -
Ah, personal anecdotes. One of the few things less reliable than a laptop.

Don't you mean anecdotal evidence?

The parts are good (the nVidia situation is the same for all brands), it's the build quality that sucks. But again, so does every other manfuacturer's build quality lately.
IBMs used to be built like tanks. Yes they were fugly, but tough. Now with their rebrand to Lenovo... They are prettier but less reliable. -
Id have to say HP's business line and Asus in my experience.

agree with flipfire.

I would say IBM's ThinkPad series were the best, with specific models being the T4x and T6x. The problem is that finding these things in new condition is becoming increasingly difficult.
