    Hi there,

I was wanting to buy a HP 8710p or w from some resellers in Australia and they all list the CTO units but dont list what you do after that in order to customize the unit.

Is anyone able to offer any advice as to what to do so I can work out the price and part options etc?

    Thanks

Could you provide links to the CTO models, I think I could probably help a little bit more if I knew exactly what you were looking at!

    oh okay,
ive heard that these companies call you once youve ordered the laptop, and ask you for the config (and charge you for it)
    or,
you have to buy the main parts yourself

Surely it just isnt the HDD, RAM and CPU though as the total I can get them for is approximately $560 AUD and this system would end up costing around $1800 less than what it is at the cheapest shop. For example:

At the shops, it is $2575 AUD
Complete if adding components myself (CPU, RAM, HDD) would be around $1000.

So I dont think its as simple as that, and $340 AUD for a barebones on this model would be way too cheap. So I am thinking other options on top of those must be added.

How would the warranty work if I did install these components myself though?

Nope, the way it works is that you have to buy the CPU, HDD, and RAM and whatever through them (and they get it through HP) so the prices are heavily inflated. That way it works out to be about the same as if you got it retail. It's not a barebones unit, they won't sell it to you without the other parts.

    Yeh I was thinking that.

So I need to contact them and ask them how much is each option then I guess.

For non-US buyers, the following options must be configured as I have done here.
Take that as a guide on the parts you need to quote. The part numbers will be different obviously because the 8710p has different parts.

I received a reply from these guys Chris.

They said it is for orders for 20+ units and that it would be more expensive. Is this true with other places too? Or is from this place only it would be like that?

I'm pretty sure it can be ordered individually as long as you find out the exact parts you need. Sometimes it is actually more expensive, but it depends. I only get it if I know it's cheaper. You need to factor in the cost of going through the trouble of configuring these though.

    Thanks.

That doesnt matter about time. I want it pretty much the way I like it.

Did you know of any place else that may sell them cheaper in single units?
