HP Compaq 8710w specs I wish to purchase:
    2.4Ghz/800/4MB
    100G 7200 RPM hard drive
    2G RAM 667Mhz
    17" 1920x1200 512MB dedicated Graphics RAM Nvidea
    3 year warranty
(and thanks to the recent review here I got more info about this notebook)
    identical specs for Vostro 1700
    2.4Ghz/800/4MB
    100G 7200 RPM hard drive
    2G RAM 667Mhz
    17" 1920x1200 512MB dedicated Graphics RAM Nvidea
    3 year warranty

They are very competitively priced, give and take of dollars...

I have a HP Compaq nw8240 for the last 3 years, and it has behaved since then; but find it sluggish for the work I do (database, simulations, mathematical and statistical, etc); I do not use the machine for graphic intensive work.(so that is not required).

My wife uses a dell, and she has had no problems with it either.

question: can some one give me some idea how the 2 notebooks match up?? and if you had to buy one, which one would you go for, and why?

    thanks a million,

    S

The HP Compaq 8710w should be thinner and lighter, I would imagine. And it has a more robust build. I'd recommend it over the Vostro.

The vostro series is not too different from the Inspiron line and so build quality wise it will be similar to the consumer series. The 8710w on the other hand is HP' higher end business workstations and so will be better built. A Dell equivalent would be the latitude/precision series notebooks.

Since they have similar specifications performance should be similar.

Well, these two notebooks aren't comparable at all...

The HP 8710w is easily the best built 17" out there, also it has a more powerful workstation video card (FX 1600 = 8700M GT), which you obviously don't need...and it's ISV-certified since it's a mobile workstation.

Also, I don't see how they can be competitively priced when the HP 8710w starts at $2,500 while the Vostro 1700 at $800... well... I don't think that I need to say anything else.

thanks for the replies; in South Africa where I come from, if I configure the Vostro with those specs and compare with the HP, they are almost the same.

it appears that HP it will be...
