I have recently bought a NC6120 with the latest BIOS version. I am really postive about this computer (my first laptop), but there is one issue I would like to discuss.

Today I noticed a low, spinning, cosntant (fanlike?) sound coming from the Fujitsu HDD unit, also when the computer is idle. I am almost sure that this sound was not audible before, because I remember enjoying the complete soundless running of the laptop (when in idle) until now. Does anyone know whether this is a problem or just normal?

I have put my ear next to the touchpad (right) and the sound is coming from that location. It is constant and does not changes with the fan which kicks in so now and then (rarely, thanks to the latest BIOS).

Turning off the computer or putting it into standby mode is the only way of getting rid of this soft somehow spinning sound.

All the HDDs make some kind of sound, but it is unusually loud, it is possible that drive is developing problem, most likely bearing.

I had Fujitsu in mine and started making sound also gave me smart error warning couple fo times, so I got it replaced in warranty with Hitachi.

Thanks for the reply. It is not unusually loud, but there is a constant sound which sounds similar to a fan. I don't think it was this way from the beginning, but I'm not completely sure about this. I only remember that I was amazed how quiet this machine was when I turned it on the first couple of times.

With other words, is it normal for these kind of HDD's to make a soft but audible fan-like sound in idle mode or is there something wrong with my HDD? Or is it something which has completely nothing to do with my HDD?

The sound is noticable either on AC or on battery. It is a sort of constant windy sound, especially noticable in quiet environments.
