Hello everyone, i posted in several other forums including the HP forum but no one can help me so far, i hope that someone at this forum can help or give me some advice..

    Here is the problem :

Laptop loses power with no warning when running on battery. By losing power, I mean it doesn't go through the normal WinXP shutdown; the screen goes dead and the indicator lights turn off.(like when you hold the power button for 5 sec.)
The power losses happen at seemingly random intervals,it can happen with 100% power, 84% power or 53% power of the battery.
Also the low battery and critical battery alarms dont alert me.The hard shutdown happens instantly.
And when i turn on the laptop on AC power the battery indicator next to the clock in sys tray shows that is completly empty(even it was at 90%,70% or 50% full battery) and starts to charge.

The laptop is 1 year and 2 months old.
And i used the battery extremely rare, i mean the laptop was almost all the time on AC power.

Do i need a new battery or there is some kind of problem with my laptop??

Thank you in advance for your reply!!

Could try cleaning the contacts on the battery. It is not unusual for a battery to go bad after a wear. They start degrading as soon as they are made. My ThinkPad has a three year warranty, but only one year for the battery. The other most likely problem is something wrong with the motherboard. Getting a new battery will be the cheapest option.

Do you experience the same problems when running on AC power? If not, it should be the battery. Try running Mobile meter and see what it shows

Some HPs have a battery saver program that can be turned off by using the fn11 key. Someone on another site, I cannot now find, mentioned the fact his screen dimmed with battery usage and HP support told him to try that.

It's possible the battery is defective. Try contacting HP and getting a replacement if it's within the 1yr mark as anything after that you have to pay.

Another issue could be a loose part somewhere causing it to short out. This would require the unit to be sent in for service.

Check HP's website. I don't know if it pertains to your problem or not, but they issued a recall on the batteries for some of the 91xx laptops a few days ago....
