i have a laptop that is working, but does not turn on due to a dead battery. however, i cannot charge the dead battery because the ac port/pin on the laptop is not working right. when i plug the adapter into the laptop, there seems to be wiggle room, and there shouldn't be. this leads me to believe something is wrong with the pin; it's loose or something.
the warranty on the laptop is up, so i can't send it back to hp, so is there anyway i can fix this problem myself? other than not being able to charge the laptop, it works, but without being able to charge it, it cannot be used![]()
sorry if this is in the wrong section... i was going to post in HP, but this seemed right also

Hi
The jack isnt directly soldered into the system board so your in luck.
You will be able to replace the jack yourself, its not hard to do as the M2000 is very easy to pull apart aslong as you follow the instructions. I could do it with my eyes closed
But theres a chance that the system board connector itself is damaged. Its also possible the jack just needs reseating and not replacing.
Heres the service manual:

and here is what you need to replace:

Can you please take a picture of the ac power port on your laptop.
If you want to replace the port, you will have to take the motherboard out of your laptop, and you will need to use a soldering iron to remove the port and replace it with a new one.
You can either buy the replacement jack from a HP inventory warehouse, or you can buy the jack from MOUSER electronics or DIGIKEY electronics. They have millions of electrical parts and great part breakdown guides, so you can find exactly what you are looking for.
The part is only about $2 from mouser or digikey, but hp may charge like $10 or more.
K-TRON -
alright so flipfire says i do not need to solder anything, just buy a replacement part, which doesn't difficult, but that piece you linked me to on ebay is about $32 and k-tron says removing and replacing this piece will require soldering
so what am i actually dealing with here... ? -
i just watched the video on how to remove and replace the dc extended board from the laptop. looks pretty easy, but is that what i'm supposed to be replacing?
-
It goes like this for the M2000:
System Board > DC Connector Board > Power Jack.
You can either replace the board (which also includes a new power jack). Or replace the jack itself on the board which requires soldering.
I suggest just replacing the DC board. Soldering might be too difficult for you. Have a look at the service manual. Youll see what im talking about.
You can probably find a cheaper DC board somewhere, i just posted that ebay link as an example. I was looking for M2000 parts myself -

well if all i have to do is buy a new dc extended board to bypass soldering something, i will definitely do that. i've never soldering anything myself, i usually had someone i knew do that for me, but i will easily be able to take everything apart and replace a piece like this.

I am also having this problem with my M2000, I bought it in 06 *I think* and have taken great care of it. I bought it at CompUSA, and got their extended warranty, but that store went out of business, I have had this problem once before and got it fixed, but now it's back.
My father said that the reason it take a charge through the DC adapter, was because of the AC adapter, So, I'll have to go find one of those.
However, it may in fact be the DC adapter, so if you could let me know if you got this fixed that would be great.
Whoo, first post on these forums! -
Do you get the problem fixed. I'm having the same type of problems with my M2000. My AC adapters keep shorting out. Way too much abuse on the power plug. I have ha dto replace my adapter three times so far. The last time was 1 month ago. The three prong AC plug that connects to the Adapter started melting it was so hot. Now my new adapter is dead. I took the laptop apart. USE THE INSTRUCTIONS and take your time. The toughest part is removing the Keyboard cover. Be gentle and use a case splitter if you have one. (Plastic wedge) won't scratch or dent but strong enough to get the parts apart. I pulled the power connector board out. It's nothing more then an extender. I could see anything wrong with it except a cold solder joint to the board from the Hot lead to the external source. I used my Ohm meter to test the borad and found no problems. I resoldered the joint and reassembled the laptop. I'm unsure if I fixed the problem or not. I need to wait for another new adapter. Byer beware. I some greedy people out there charging as much as 200 for this extender.
